MultiChoice's plan to win the streaming war

MultiChoice CEO Calvo Mawela said streaming has changed the broadcasting landscape, with linear TV stagnating and streaming showing strong growth.

To ensure that MultiChoice is not left behind, it is investing heavily in its Showmax and DStv Stream products.

Yeah but you still need to provide something people want to stream. After more than a year of not having showmax I bought a months voucher again just for kicks. The kids went "that's on Netflix" like 20 times and nobody's bothered to use it again.

I think their only appeal right now lies in Afrikaans content. Might not be enough. If they allowed you to add on even just one major sports channel of your own choosing, that would be a different proposition.

There's an evolving, inexperienced new market that they're tapping into. But eventually it will mature.

That said, I'm always surprised at Netflix's success given how basic most of its offerings (US access included) are reported to be.

Highly unlikely that they will ever get those that got frustrated enough to cancel their services to ever come back, I certainly wouldn't use them if they were the only streaming platform available in the country. They simply have a zero ROI.
