MultiChoice is hiring someone to go after online pirates

Does anybody else think that this will kill the internet in SA? Will fibre even be something on the cards. What exactly do people use the internet for anyway?

they are also pursuing a number of criminal prosecutions of individuals using free-to-air set top boxes on the basis that these can be used to "hack" into their broadcast

“Monitoring social and media networks, identifying and reporting illegal activity and content
Profiling social and media network sites and gathering and compiling of illegal conduct, content and infringements
Content take downs on social and media network sites
Compiling of evidence bundles“

Are they going to stalk people on social media now? Is mybb regarded as a form of social media...?

I dont know lol. I dont even know what a nzb is? Just going by this article.

The only thing they can do is go after people running torrent clients on their PC. They need to download a torrent and then they get all the peers. Then they can see which is from SA. Get a court order for the ISPs to disclose the owner. And so on.

But they would need to download 1000s of torrents to make a dent. Then they would need to sue or lay charges against 1000s of people.

Sure they might try to make an example of a few but I don't see that having any effect. People will just use tools that doesn't expose their identity.

To add, aren't they committing a copyright infringement downloading torrents too?

And lastly, how do they prove it was you. Multiple people can use an AP. Not to mention all the unsecured AP's around.

The internet is going to die in South Africa. Dont the pirates indirectly pay for those copper lines, cellphone network infrastructure and fibre.

I would actually like to see ISP responses on this article

We will abide by all laws that govern this process in this country on condition that every single aspect of their application to us is above board and proper due process has been followed.

I also expect this to be the most fruitless position at MultiChoice since content quality assurance manager...

How are they going to monitor NZB traffic? Noob question. Isn't it encrypted?

The best way to fight piracy is through pricing and distribution.

I hope the rest of the ISP follow suit as it's going to be darn hard to prove someone was watching Hulu

Dont most students have uncapped in their digs etc. How do you prove who downloaded content? Your neighbour could have hacked your wifi? Will internet cafes also shut down? Will schools and universities be sued?

BTW, the main focus of this position is REDISTRIBUTION, not DOWNLOADING. They are NOT going after downloaders (at least not primarily). They are going after the guys who put the stuff there for the downloaders to download.

For example, the guy who hooks up his DSTV so that he can live stream a game onto a pirate sport streaming site. That guy is in trouble.

I don't miss DSTV and its n-th repeat of episode 99492374628 of storage wars. I get much more interesting, new stuff from Youtube.
For example, a man with 1000 Klein bottles under his house:

Well we don't store any such data. They would have to intercept the stream or request the information from Hulu directly, for example, and Hulu would have to comply...

No offence but your business is going to file for bankruptcy if this happens. Why would anybody need big caps for reading emails and browsing. Wont cellphone networks replace you guys? I am just curious

You can, sure. But how are they going to find your IP anyway? You connect to a news server without any sharing like torrents. It's a connection between you and some foreign (usually) service. They have no jurisdiction.

They might go after sites like nXXXX.co.za or nXXXXXXX.co.za.

Not so sure about that. They mention nzbs, torrents etc.

I am starting to wonder if milo is a bloody agent for monochoice

Nope I just find this interesting. The stalking on social media thing sounds like the way China handles the internet. Censoring and controlling it's people.
