MultiChoice working on DStv Stream and Showmax ads that could allow for lower pricing

“The business remains focused on developing advertising technology solutions for the streaming and video-on-demand environments via DStv Stream and Showmax,” MultiChoice said in its half-year financial report.

Asked whether this means that MultiChoice is considering an ad-supported tier for Showmax, the company said it is monitoring international developments but doesn’t have immediate plans to that effect.

Why develop it unless you are going to use ads to support pricing tiers - unless you going to ram it down the throats of your paying customers.

IBIWISI. Ads with their traditional streaming somehow didn't stop them from raising prices year on year.
Or lower it, for that matter... There is NO CHANCE that this will actually mean lower prices, as that would cannibalize their satellite service.

If there was ever a thing to be learned about ads on any video streaming platform is that it's a bad move, unlike youtube were people watching ads with free content, I don't think this would work for DSTV mainly because of the poor content on that platform.

Come on Frikkie... here's a new song for you, let's rework a song by The Cars. I am sure Ric Ocasek won't mind since he's in the ground

Let the good times roll
Let MultiChoice knock you around
Let the good times roll
Let Frikkie make you a clown
Let DSTV leave you up in the air
Let Frikkie catch you downloading a show there
Let the good times roll
Let the good times roll-oll
Let the (good times roll)

Let the stories be told
Let Frikkie threaten us as he wants
Let the torrents be old
Let them repeat the same old KAK
Let them leave you up in the air
Let them rodger you with Pirate Flair
Let the good times roll
Let the good times roll-oll
Won't you let the (good times roll)

If the piracy BS is real
Let Frikkie give you a ride
If he's got weekend-in-jail appeal
Let IRDETO be on his side
Let MonoChoice leave you up in the air
Let them rodger your ass in prison there
Let the good times roll
Won't you let the good times roll-oll

More ads?

We already have about 20 minutes of every hour used for ads and promos.

And Frikkie wants to know why people pirate.
Ads used to be uncommon, now it's part of catchup (on ads). Usually they're advertising itself (no one else must want to pay, perhaps because they realise little increase in revenue will follow it and it'll cost and arm and a leg, so, why bother).
