So today over lunch I fired up my Internet Banking just to check what is going on in my various accounts.

Going through my credit card statement, I notice a payment to Kulula for R9300 odd processed on 5 January, when I was at home, doing nothing like any respectable guy on holiday. My first thought was that this is a possible mistake on Kulula's Side, maybe late processing of flight + car hire from November when I flew to Cape Town.

I head over to my email to check the statements and I see that my flight and car hire was only around R2500 and that Europcar has already debited the R2200 deposit back to me. So nowhere was an amount close to R9300 involved.

I phone Kulula and they put me through to their fraud guy and he immediately saw that a fake ID purchased the tickets on 3rd of Jan and flew on 4 Jan.

Results:

Kulula is going to refund the full amount. I had to cancel my credit card and will now have to wait for 5-7 days for a replacement to be issued. I am also going to start watching my accounts a lot closer.

PS I used to have my banks banking app on my phone and checked my accounts 2-3 times a week, but it fell and the screen died on me and my replacement phone is not up to anything more than phone calls and text messages.

Bloody criminals. I hope his soft and jiggly's rot off.

Last year I had a similar problem. Someone somehow cloned my card or got hold of my details and went ape with all sorts of airline related purchases.

They blew almost 21k with SAA, Kulula and Mango.

Very odd, but in the end I got a refund.

Eish... but it's good to hear Kulula will refund you!

They said they will refund me. Will have to wait and see. But my next mission is to fight with the bank. Their fraud department is usually on the ball and on previous occasions has blocked suspicious transactions. I don't know why they didn't do it this time, since the name the criminal used is VASTLY different from mine.

Didn't you get an SMS for the purchase?

How do you not notice R10k sooner.

Like I said, I usually checked my accounts regularly on my phone, but my crappy new phone doesn't have my banking app (lack of internal memory) and I never received a SMS about this.

I will try and confirm, but my other bank SMS's do come through. Maybe the cellphone networks were overloaded during the holidays.
