That's not true at all, brand image has always been hugely important... Why do you think Nike chooses to pay millions to have athletes use their kit, it's so people can associate the athletes success and image with their brand. It's not just familiarity, it's what that brand signifies in people's minds..No, advertisers have never given a **** and still don't, all they care about is branding, ie getting their brands logo seen more than the other and stuck in your head so when you go to the store, your eyes and hands automatically go to what you're familiar with...
The same reason Lance Armstrong got millions of dollars in endorsements, because he was an icon who survived cancer and won seven tours, and the same reason all his sponsors ditched him when he admitted to doping.
Same story with Kanye West, he was a huge draw for Adidas until he became an anti Semitic twat and their brand image was being hurt by their association with him. Brand recognition is important, but so. Is what that brand means to people.
Advertisers being concerned about their image is nothing new, am not saying their motives
