Well, according to me its the while mobile Ramadan thing thats the problem, the Olympics are always held at around the same time, while Ramadan is mobile because its based on a lunar calender system...

Some reader replies from the same column:
I am Muslim, and I think this is stupid.
An athlete won't be forced to fast if they are in the Olympics. They will be fine. They can do whatever and it will be forgiven because of this obligation.

Well it could clash with Christmans, Hannukah or any other religious festival.
I am sure that any devout Muslim would have more important things to worry about than participating in a sporting event.
- Jo Kavanagh, Stansted, Essex
The games are being held in a non Muslim country and the dates have been fixed to ovecome anticipated logistical problems. The Muslim athletes will be in the minority.
I know that exceptions exist in Islam where Muslims need not fast if circumstances dictate otherwise. Such exceptions include travelling, medical treatment and others. They can make up for non fasting days by fasting on the same number of days that were missed at a later date. This is perfectly acceptable in Islam.
The world does not need to stop just because it is Ramadan !

Makes perfect sense...

I don't see the big deal, 2012 is a little way off, I'm sure plans can be made, it's not as if its to late to change a couple of things

Remember, faiths should be respected, the idea of the olympics is to include everybody!

Agreed.

The Muslim participants should ask permission from their religious leaders to be exempted from fasting for that period. It is permissible in their religion for elderly, sickly and pregnant woman to break the fast , so why not the sportsmen and woman as well?
The "anger" is unwarranted IMO.

Otherwise reschedule, like Hoss reckons.

Man, these muslims go round all day looking for things to get upset about.

The day they really have grounds to complain it's going to be seen as just another outcry against the west. Like the boy who cried wolf.

Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below?

PLEASEEEEE!!

It's a Christian country, no a muslim one!

So if I go to a muslim country and complain about my religious days, do you think they'll even care?

SO tired of everyone wanting to be politically correct - makes me sick.

I don't know what the fuss is all about? People are free to do whatever they feel suits them. They should not enforce their way on others. As this is "sports" related, why do our local cricketers continue playing in the MTN Domestic cup? Guys like Hasim and Ahmed Amla, Yusuf Abdullah, Emraan Kahn (all dolphins), Gulam Bodi & that Farhaan guy (Titans). That is their profession and you are allowed not to fast if it affects your livelyhood. The Champions Trophy is being played in India with a strong muslim population. Pakistan is there???? Just common sense, that's all.

Jeez these Muslims love to go wild about anything.
Really if they dont like it why dont they just leave, no one is forcing them to stay.
I think they should just shut up and deal with it

The olympics is supposed to be a secular, neutral event. When the majority of Muslim countries grant the same rights to everybody else they currently enjoy in the West then they can come back with these issues, until then rather sort yourself out before blaming other people.

Could you imagine the Olympics or any other World event being planned over Christmas?

Why not the same respect for one of the other major religions of the world?

Slightly different considering Christmas is one day. Logistically it'd be a lot easier to work around that. The equivalent is maybe planning the Olympics over e.g. Lent. I think the problem is that the number of petty issues Muslims have been complaining about lately has risen so exponentially that people are just getting tired of it and refusing to pay attention to what could even be legitimate concerns.

The organisers won't be that stupid, because most people will be with their families and nobody will be at the event? Ticket sales?
