Mobile virtual network operator boom in South Africa

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) offer alternatives to dealing with larger carriers like Vodacom and MTN while still using the bigger networks' excellent infrastructure to provide subscribers with coverage.

Several South African banks, retailers, and Internet service providers, including Standard Bank, FNB, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Afrihost, and Axxess — provide MVNO services.

It’s almost as if they are benefitting from it in more ways than one

Which also begs the question with the debate raging on, why are the others (even the native networks) still so expensive when Capitec offers 1GB of non-expiring data for R45?

Will await the next article : "MVNO data costs compared". That one will at least have the nice tabularized summary.

I feel like Capitec is gonna do well at R45/gig. Esp if they can make it easy for their current banking customers to buy and load the data.

It would be nice to see tabular data of what mobile carrier's each MVNO uses. Also, are there any MVNO's that run on Vodacom's network? It seems like most MVNO's are using MTN and Cell C. I wonder why there aren't MVNOs using Vodacom's network

There are indeed a lot of MVNOs. Looks like the offerings now are a lot better than they were a few years ago.
