I don't understand all the hype around their cheapest offering! I have been a happy MWeb customer for years now! I have no reason to complain. My fibre was only off once since I started using it years ago!

My experience with Mweb is based in when they bought out Icon Internet, interesting to see nothing has changed in the last 20 years.

MWEB said that it does not offer a fixed fibre rate over a 12 month period, contrary to what the reader claims they were told on a call with a consultant.

This is always the issue. Consultants can say whatever they like with impunity to secure a sale. Try asking MWeb for the recording and they will have conveniently lost it.

They way that statement is worded, they're implying that the customer is lying about the fact that the consultant claimed that the price would be fixed for a 12 month period.

I've experienced this time and time again with companies. Short of getting it in writing there's usually no recourse for the customer.

Even in instances where I've had the facts down in writing they aren't willing to assist without a little nudge from the independent authorities.

eMpTyN and Vodascum did the same with me.. you only pay the 1st two months of the contract the advertised fee... Then you find an increase in price. The crap part is, it's in their terms and conditions and you can do nothing about it.

A contract REALLY...you have to have a certain intelligence to stay on planet earth, many are boarder line cases.

"The customer said they had been assured by a consultant when signing up that the R399 per month original price would be fixed for 12 months,"

When are people going to learn... NEVER EVER take the word of a consultant. 1. They don't know what they talking about and 2. Their job is to close and finalize the deal, not chase you away.

Other than that, I was on MWEB back in ADSL days and there was a reason I left.

Vodacom increased the price on a 2 year data contract I signed and said it was in terms of the contract. Problem is that I asked for a copy of the contract but never received it, when you complain they just say you can look it up on the internet, however you can never find it. Can they really say they have your agreement when you are told one thing by an agent and they deliberately avoid you getting a signed copy of a contract?

MWEB will increase its fibre pricing for certain customers regardless of when they signed up to their package, and has explained that it is within its rights to do this.
Surely any "reasonable person" would assume that if you sign a contract for 12 months, that the price you signed up at, would be the ruling price for that 12 months. Any company which hides behind wording in a contract to later be able to claim that it is "within their righrts" is not being ethical. The ordinary "person in the street" is not a trained lawyer, with the skills, experience, and nous to pick apart the wording in a contact that most people sign blindly in good faith. So in my opinion, if MWEB have the right to change a contract price at a whim, then so should the customer be permitted to cancel the remaining terms of the contract.

Customers need to learn to record their own calls and get the name of the consultant so they have , at least , some form of proof.
There are a number of apps that can be used.
Its the only way to turn the tables on these sort of con artist tactics.

...and customers are well within their rights to leave.
Unfortunately, leaving in this instance will still require the client to pay for the installation, router and connection. And that is usually quite a bit! But yes, if you deal with sharks, you better be a strong swimmer.

Mweb will blame the increase on the increased prices from fibre providers like Vuma. Why it was allowed that a fibre provider has a monopoly in an area is beyond me. But that's how it is and they are now coining it. I now only have one choice in my area. So, take it or leave it. Eish.

They are not alone. Vox also raise prices at seemingly arbitrary dates, before 1 year of service.

Their sales calls are recorded. If I were the customer, I'd request their recording from MWEB to prove the consultant lied. If MWEB never offered fixed-term contracts for fiber, then the employee was clearly lying as it's never been a policy, and shouldn't be in any training manuals or sales materials they had access to.

Oh, and does everyone forget? MWEB is owned by Multichoice.... I wasn't surprised by the article or the fact they did this. People have short memories
