Hi Guys,

I want to connect via my EDGE card (it works and connects) to send data and receive it via my USB satellite receiver. It works with a dial-up but the VPN connection fails when I am connected via GPRS.

Please help?

Been trying that 2

I have the same and have been trying this out but the sheer amount of uploaded data required when downloading big files makes it just as expensive as as you know who so its back to dialup and satellite at night and weekends only thank goodness we still have infinite call, I notice if you try uploading on GPRS it keeps dropping the satellite possibly because the uplink portion cannot sustain the data transfer on the slow connection and loses the satellite signal, just a thought.
BTW I have a Novatel U630 with an MTN contract and most times can only get GPRS.

I wish someone would hurry up and install ADSL where I live, in Richards Bay.

Hi,

I have been using Mweb's one-way satelite connection over GPRS since MTN launched the new data tariff's and it works perfectly.

Mao - When downloading any file the data you send is minimal - this should not be a problem. My GPRS connection runs at 2 Kbyte/s (no, not a typo) and I have no problems with the satelite. Only problem I have is sending big emails.

Wallace - Your VPN link's settings should be exactly the same as with a normal dial-up.

I've never tested this with EDGE so don't know how well that works, but it should be even better.

I paid about R2000 for an internal pci card (Broadlogic) when I signed with Mweb a couple of years ago. Think their a lot cheaper now. (anybody know where I can find a USB external card, plz pm me.)

Signed with Mweb, but last I heard they are not accepting more subscribers. Card came from Mweb.

Monthly costs:

R 325 (vat incl.) - 24h a day access, no cap
or
R 275 (vat incl.) - after hours access only, no cap

Speed are on average 20 Kbyte/s, although it can go up to 40 KB/s.

can anyone please explain:
how does this actually work?do u connect using Gprs and do the actual download bandwith via the satellite?so u only pay for the connection via gprs about 50kb = nothing?but you limited to the speeds of the GPRS connection?and if u connect via 3g or edge u will get those speeds and no cost besides the satelite fixed monthly cost?please clarify...And mweb does say they dont do it so where can i get it from?

Hi

Wallace - I'm using XP Pro.

Mams - One-way satelite means exactly that - data can only move in one direction (down from the satelite to you) so everything you recieve is via the satelite at 20 Kbyte/s. Data you send is via GPRS (or EDGE?) at 2 Kbyte/s (in my case)

In practice something like this:
Make a std GPRS connection
On top of that, make a VPN connection to MWEB
All data you send goes via the VPN (at GPRS speeds) to Mweb
All data you recieve comes from MWEB, via the satelite, to your pc.

This works very well, because the data you recieve is much more then what you send.

Things to look out for is:
Mail sending - can be slow via GPRS
Online gaming - never tried, but I think that would not work.
Bittorrents - not good at all, but can be done
Lag on the satelite link is quite long, but for downloads and general surfing it is quite good. Do not expect ISDN responsiveness.

Costs is my case is as follows:

R325 p/m to MWEB
Approx. R 200 p/m to MTN (GPRS costs, upload only)

Try Tiscali, when MWEB bought them, I think the satelite services was moved to there. (not sure)

GPRS/satellite combo Not for P2P

As I said you cant really use this with GPRS/3G and Satellite for P2P, that GPRS counter goes up like a rocket for sent data.
I dont think MWEB offers this anymore.

Wallace are you sure you are not getting stuck with a private IP when switching to GPRS.

Are they just not taking new business? I'm still using the sat product, and they have not yet indicated that it will be discontinued.

I can't even connect to the VPN. How do you do it?
When connecting to a VPN do you still pay normal GPRS rates? or is it higher than connecting to INTERNET domain?

Bloemguy - yep, that's the way I understand it.

Mams - It's a std GPRS connection to the internet domain, so std rates apply.

Man - this thread just shows the sad state of affairs in the outlying areas of the country. I feel bad for complaining (not really - just a manner of speaking ;-) ) about Telkom and ADSL after reading this. Satelite internet access should really be an alternative by now, but sadly prices are still ridiculous. Who are the satelite players at this stage and why is there no competition... oh sorry - I forgot - I think it's Telkom (30% gov) and Sentech (just plain gov). Sad.
