I wonder how MWEB Guy must feel reading all the negative posts :p
But truth is MWEB deserves it.

Then I find this gem on their FB page...

''Mweb Guy - We are not hard capping the account, we are throttling the account.

You should still be able to connect to the internet at an inferior speed.

Like · 23 hours ago""

Truth be told - as soon as they drop that silly throttle thing, I would gladly go back. Till then, I will advocate for any ISP except them.

This.

I'll be back in a heartbeat. Or at least let me know what my limits are, so that I know that I'm throttled without having to log in to check.

Afternoon, please remember that throttling is calculated over a 30day rolling period. Therefore the last 30days data would have been the reason for your account being throttled.

Im not throttled or capped, but torrent speeds seem to be stuck/shaped at 50kb on a 4Mb line whenever i try. Normal browsing and stuff is fine.
Switch to Telkom or Openweb accounts and get full speed.

I'm a bit grumpy about this MWeb Guy!

Evening Sneeky, we never guarantee torrent speeds as they obtain the lowest priority on our network.

Also not fair if you are comparing the speeds with a caped account.

Speeds normally increase in the latter hours of the evening.

Fair enough, it is an uncapped account though btw. I understand your policy to a degree, although it is very vague and undefined but get where you guys are coming from, however, I would and do expect a bit better than that. Just so you know.

edit: Ok, sry misunderstood, so you are saying I should rather have a capped account to get my speed then, like the others I have?

Capped accounts operate differently to shaped account, however the torrent traffic itself is shaped on our network.

Torrents are not prioritised on any network and you will find that speeds will fluctuate through the course of the day and with the different files you are downloading.

Ok, got it and understood. However some constructive criticism if I may.
You already have a policy in place to regulate the traffic on your network of users, or abusers that you implemented just recently.
Believe it or not I support this fully (unless you hit me with restrictions that is ;) as I feel I moderate my bandwidth usage well and within what I deem fair. I would probably use more if I had a 10mb line to make use of streaming options and stuff on my smarttv but that's another matter.

October, 2013 2659.44
September, 2013 55880.32
August, 2013 94009.79
July, 2013 126547.52
June, 2013 90700.90
May, 2013 122770.27
April, 2013 64851.04
March, 2013 24566.81

The point is though, 50kb on a 4mb line doesn't quite cut the mustard with me if I want to download something, no matter what the time of day and that's how it ran all day today as an example.

Rather offer me a capped product that fits my usage, that I can use when I want, how I want at a speed that is more representative of what my line speed is.

I understand your views Sneeky.

Just as a test, can you perhaps change your username realm on your router interface to @dslmweb.co.za and let me know if this makes any difference.

I would like to do a couple more tests as well.

Much the same, averaging around 50-80kb at the moment on either one

What are your news download speeds like?
I really have no issue with anything outside of a torrent platform. Everything else is perfectly acceptable. Its not a huge issue, just in my belief, unnecessarily restrictive.

Have you tried checking your download manager settings?

No need, switch to a capped isp account and the same program with the same settings runs the downloads at 70-100% the line speed. Its not my settings.

Then it has to be us shaping the traffic, perhaps check a bit later tonight what the speeds are like and revert back to me

Sure thing, if I use a torrent I normally do it late at night, but sometimes, like today I run it during the day while at work and it crawled all day.
I just think it should be 'less shaped' if that makes sense, considering the recent policy changes you guys have had.
Again, aimed at being constructive criticism.
Thx

I have been testing torrents/newsgroups over the last four days on my 1Mbps account.

I have used 332MB on my M-Web Uncapped this month. (Unthrottled).

Whenever I fire up a torrent or IS News Server on my complimentary Gamco 50GB account it reaches my full line speed very quickly. News Servers basically instantaneously.

M-Web Uncapped hardly wants to go above 20kb on the torrent and right now I am testing the Mweb News Server, 53kb pe second (stable). Switch over to IS News and it reaches ~100kb+ on my 1Mbps line.

Tests were all done 6PM onwards on every evening. Wish the shaping wasn't so heavy.

One is a capped product vs uncapped - I guess this is to be expected though. There was however a very long time the M-Web account did NOT behave like this.
