Mweb Static Ip's

For a static IP Mweb want to give me that rubbish Billion router of theirs pre-configured.

They won't allow me access to it and I wanted to use a Netgear or Linksys router of my own - i'm not stupid and can configure it with my static ip and anything else if they told me what I need to know. Hell it can't be harder than a 1600 Cisco to configure!

But those Billion things have the capability to setup L2TP VPN connection (without IPsec). Point to point.

Do you think my static ip doesn't actually sit on my front door but rather across a VPN connection via their router?
All my internet traffic is going via a VPN.....Anyone know?

They run a custom vpn that only their admins are allowed access to, its nothing new since the start of static IP ADSL Internet Solutions used the same setup but with Cisco routers. I wont be surprised if its actually running on the IS network. Lots of big ISP's resell IS products including Mweb.

Definitely not IS. At least not on the Business Adsl service.

The Billions are a bit odd though, what package are you on? They only given me Cisco 800's.

not anymore. ever since they installed their own IPC, they moved away from IS close to four-five years ago. all mweb products are on their own infrastructure.

As with all routers (even cisco or juniper) if you want access then it's really not that hard, you might be in breach of the terms of your contract but you can still get into the router if you really want to.

No they don't! Also VPN.

It's a similar deal (and does NOT work with windows RRAS 2003/ 2008/ 2012 because if you hack the registry to disable IPsec there is no way to send the secret (not to be confused with the IPsec pre shared key settings on the l2tp) to establish the L2TP connection.)

They not using IPSEC which is the problem otherwise any L2TP/IPSEC client as is built into windows would work. But Nooooooo . L2TP only without IPsec.

The Billion is about R1200 and the Zyxel one is about 2 grand.

If you want a Static IP then you must buy the hardware needed. Unfortunately there is no other way until Telkom introduce bitstream. Then ISP's will be able to assign Static IP to a PPPoE account...
