MWeb: 'You can use Gmail and YouTube, but you can't use Google.co.za'

I'm still on a capped account with MWeb. EDIT: I expect that I won't be able to access international sites when I reach my cap. That's the agreement and it's fully understandable. This thread is really just a laugh at MWeb and at their apparent incompetence/inconsistencies in service provision.

Last month, I reached my cap and bought a booster. When that ran out, I just used local sites, though I continued to access my Gmail and Google Drive accounts. But one day, when I tried to access Google.co.za, I was shot down in a ball of flames onto MWeb's "You've reached your monthly data cap" page. "You can continue to access local-only sites." Yes, but I'm trying to access Google.co.za, and I can't. But right after getting that capped page, I accessed my Gmail.com account. How can this be? I know Google hosts local servers. Is Gmail.com local but Google.co.za international?

For the hell of it, I then accessed YouTube and watched 20mins worth of video seamlessly. After that, I tried to load another video. No can do Bob, "You've reached your monthly data cap". But I've just been watching YouTube? Re-open the browsing session and YouTube works a treat.

I tried maps.google.com. No problems there, browse all you want, even Street View. Que?

I gave MWeb a call: "I've reached my cap. I landed up on the page which says I can continue to browse local-only sites. But I can't access Google.co.za."

"Yes, sir, that's because even though it's a .co.za address, it's hosted overseas." Local traffic that should head to a local server gets sent overseas? Alrighty then.

"OK, that's understandable, but then tell me why I can access Gmail.com quite easily? I've just watched a good few videos on YouTube to boot."

"Oh. That's funny"

"So what's the deal? You're saying that I can't access a simple search page with a .co.za address page but I can access an .com webmail account and even YouTube even though I'm now capped?"

"Yes, sir."

"Please give me details as to how I can cancel my MWeb account."

This is another one of the reasons why I'm moving away from MWeb. Unless there's something I'm missing?

PS. To top it off, that evening I watched 2 hours' worth of Clarkson's War Stories on YouTube without so much as a peep from MWeb.

Sounds like uncapped product are better suited for your needs

8Gb, as per cap, 2Mbps line. I'm currently looking at Telkom's 2Mbps uncapped services, especially with the upcoming speed increases in mind.

thats not much. If you use less than 40GB per month then Afrihost capped will suit you and it is easy to buy more from their portal if u run out. If you go with uncapped and download less than 40 GB per month it is just overkill as capped is cheaper.

Also keep in mind the free speed upgrades that will automatically upgrade you to 4Mbps is starting from Sep11

The domain doesn't say much, what matters is the IP. If the IP is local, then you would be able to access the website. There are ways to force google sites to their local counterparts, but certain less popular videos on youtube aren't cached locally so you won't be able to access all of them.

Nothing new.

OK, that's what I'm missing. Thanks for that.

The domain extension only tells you where the domain name is registered. Once you have registered your domain name, you are free to host it where ever you want. There are plenty of servers, hosted locally, with .com domain names, as they have been registered as such.

The gmail and google drive information is possibly cached locally (or even hosted on local servers for South African users, I do not know), and hence will route to South African IPs, so that will count as local. Same with the videos you watched, the first one might have been cached locally, while the second was't.

As much as I have come to dislike MWeb, the only incompetency encountered in your story above, is that the call center agent didn't know this, but even that is stretching it, as call center agents are typically not actually very technical and just have scripts to read.

Alright, thanks for giving me such a thorough explanation.

Well then MWeb isn't really to blame here, apart from that call center agent. Sorry MWeb.

Hi darste

I was just to ask for your account details.

google.co.za is hosted locally, so I'm not sure why MWEB wouldn't allow you access...proof bellow:

Depends on which DNS server you use to resolve the IP. Also, some content on the webpage might not be locally hosted.

Well I do know I used to be able to access google.co.za from my capped Telkom account once all international bandwidth was used up. Not sure why Google would have changed the DNS server, unless MWEB resolve it to an international one or route via an international path?

In my hosts file, I have several Google services pointing to 165.165.38.147 (Locally Telkom hosted). This seems to speed up various things as it both skips out DNS resolving, and guarantees a local connection.

http://165.165.38.147/ will take you to the Google Home Page, for example.

You might want to ping / trial both 165.165.38.147 and 74.125.233.95 and see which works out best for you :)
