Hi Guys,

I have a jetta 3 1.8, i did a complete service on the car.

The car recently started making a ticking noise from the tappet cover, i replaced the lifters which i was told was the fault but the noise did not go away.

before i could change the oil , the oil was thin, i used the shell 20w40 oil.

what could be the cause of the oil getting to weak? and also the ticking noise from head.

thanks in advance

When last was the oil changed? Usually thinning oil is caused by dilution through petrol ending up in the oil due to a rich mixture (especially when driving short distances).

Hi dj_jyno,

Like 2 weeks back, it was weak before i did the oil change,

could a bad oil pump cause this and the ticking noise?

Hi

Sorry, I meant to ask how old the oil was (years and km if possible) before you changed it two weeks ago. The ticking can definitely be caused by low oil pressure, but I would have it tested before simply changing the oil pump.

Is the ticking noise related to the rpm of the motor?
Do you still hear it once a warm motor is switched off?
Does it have any difficulty to start?
How is the fuel consumption? better or worse than say 3 months back?

A Jetta 3 must be at least 17 years old by now, so you can expect wear on hydraulic tappets. A top end overhaul is indicated

hi wetkit,

yes the noise does get louder the higher the rpm gets,

i dont hear the noise once its turned off.

it does have difficulties to start at sometimes.

it is normal on fuel consumption its always been the same to me.

What Chris said.

OP has replaced tappets, if I remember a previous post correctly.

Still waiting for the engine code so I can see recommended oil weight, I think what is in there now is too viscous.

Wondering if it is not perhaps the injectors? Old dirty, they do tick tick tick, and if dirty and cold might not spray the fuel as it is suppose to?

Jetta 3 is 1.8 Carb iirc. CSX?

I used castrol Edge once in my old VW motor with tappet noises, stick to helix (yellow) in my older cars now.

Was referred to as a 1.8i in the other post.

Initially they were carb, then with an update later on , they all got fuel injection.
