He's right. When I first started working, the company paid my tax without me having a tax reference number. I only needed to sign up and get a tax reference number half a year later when I needed to file my tax return. I also got back a tidy sum from SARS after filing my tax because I had only worked for half the tax year.
This was in 2006 though so maybe things have changed.
Yup you don’t need a tax number for them to be paying the PAYE.
Had a nightmare of a time as I worked for a company for two years without a tax number and they just kept paying it.
In many cases this happens where people are under the thresholds and don’t claim tax. So their PAYE gets paid while they have no tax number as they never submit tax.
