my imac just tumbled....

hi all
im new to this forum and to mac in fact...
my imac just tumbled today....its the 20 inch aluminium model -the glass just shattered.there are a few nicks, scratches and dents on the aluminium casing.the outer pane of the screen is completely gone.the inner pane has one or two light scratches and a hole (bout 1or 2mm) where the lcd is now dead.
turned it on and everything works fine....i just cant bear to look at it.
what are the options available to me...leave it and carry on?just replace the outer pane of the glass or fix the whole thing...either i think would be a rather expensive exercise which may not be worth it....
please help....

I'd buy a PC with the insurance money and pocket the change, or get a huge screen

hi.my household insurance may cover it.its not specified though.in my state i didnt even think of that.thanks

Damn. They're hard to repair, but maybe it's worth it. You can run an external monitor from it though, a 23" Samsung is just R2000.

Fix the screen, I guess. Don't worry about the dents and scratches, a Mac is a computer, it's a tool to be used and as long as it works, it's good enough.
Fixing the screen LCD should be cheaper than buying a brand new machine.

You should see the iMac takeapart guide. It's hardcore. But it can be done.

I reckon because its an iMac use an externakl screen - u can pic up 26-inch screen for just over R3000 - will cost more to fix a imac screen for sure

hi just an update for those interested.the total cost for the repair was R10K.
that is new lcd, new glass panel cover and new aluminium bezel.
because the lcd was in fact fine -with just a little hole in it (kinda like a dead pixel) surrounded by a 4mm diameter imperfection in the glass i opted to keep it.the glass panel cover,aluminium bezel +labour =R2k.not bad i thought.
the machine is as good as new except for a small ding in the lcd which i can happily live with....

Was it not worth putting that 10k towards upgrading to one of the newer iMacs? My brothers iMac got hit by lightning, the only thing that was not working was the ethernet ports. He had it fixed at R8k, they had to replace the logic board or something like that. But since it was one of the older single core iMacs I still can't believe he had it repaired... A few months later he has just decided he wants a Macbook instead! Doh!
