Hi guys,

Lately, I have noticed when I play sound on my laptop, on max setting, it starts making a really worrying and weird screechy sound...almost like as if the speakers on the laptop are lose. I bought my laptop in 2011, it is the Dell XPS L502X.

What could be causing this? Are my speakers lose? What can I do to fix it?

Thanks

I don't know how else to describe this....is it maybe the dust causing the problem? My laptop is really dusty inside...I want to send it in to be opened up and cleaned, but im not sure if this will void the warranty.

Try blowing the dust out. It sounds like dust may have ingressed between the coil and the magnet. There is a dust cap over the coil but I have known the glue to come apart

If you have warranty left , just phone them they will come out and replace the parts , needing replacement.

Dell warranty ftw!!

If the signal from the machine via HDMI or speaker out is ok, then it is either: The amplifier being overloaded (which might be due to a malfunction of the speaker's coil - a short circuit) or a mechanical fault with the speaker itself. I am more inclined to think of the latter reason, having repaired similar faults several times. The speakers are so cheap it is really a matter of finding one that fits in the space provided

^^ This. Your laptop should have come with a 3 year warranty. Phone Dell Support ZA on 0860 103 017. Have your service tag ready (should be on a sticker underneath your laptop, or inside the battery compartement if your laptop has a user-replaceable battery).

Alternatively, enter your service tag here, and it will tell you if your laptop is still under warranty: http://www.dell.com/support/my-support/us/en/19/Products/. If the warranty info on the website doesn't seem to coincide with the date you purchased your laptop, then you can provide them with proof of purchase, and they will still honour the warranty (if it is within 3 years from date of purchase). Usually the warranty is registered on their systems a few months before the laptop is actually sold by the retailer.

I wasn't impressed with the Dell warranty. I have an XPS and the speaker output jack became faulty, in as much the first time I used it, it made an intermittent contact.

So I called Dell and 10 days later this guy comes and says "you have an intermittent contact". I mean, such scientific diagnosis after I told him exactly what the problem is. So he goes away and says he will return. I forgot about it and only called them 5 months later. Dell told me that this is not a warranty claim so they won't be fixing it.
