Okay, so I managed to setup ICS between me and a friend here using a wireless network (yay for me for learning)

Now I was wondering, to save on bandwidth like normal ISP's do, and cache, for instance the google logo, would it be possible to setup some kind of transparent proxy server so my friend would get cached stuff instead of downloading from the net the whole time?

Help save the bandwidth. Decent download speeds for TheRodent! Stop downloading now!!!

Why do you need a transparent proxy? Just install a standard proxy application on the "server" and change his browser settings to point to it. As he's apparently your friend he shouldn't have a problem with this [;)]

yip besides to setup a transparent proxy you need to do this as step 1 ...

step 2 would involve rerouting all outbound www traffic to the proxy port/server this is more complex but worth fiddling for for education purposes...

I can help you. Im running a transparent *caching* proxy on my connection. No need to fck around with browser settings. Obviously as its a wireless network any monkey picking up DHCP or joining your WLAN will get access to the bandwidth. BUT it can be set it up to provide one time authentication via web browser (I think) but I havent played with it since I havent set up my WLAN yet. Mail me for info on how to set this up. Shouldnt be too much trouble.
Oh and Im NOT using Linux..

Try an use something like smoothwall's transparrent proxy (almost the easiest thing in the world to set up), if u've got a free machine lying around and dont mind it doing nothing else than being a beefed up firewall and proxy server. It does run on the 2.4 kernel so the usb driver (i think it was created by the rodent) wont work, i do think i saw something about a IPW driver for 2.4 in these forums the other day though. Worth a try...
