My site so slow

I have recently put my website back online with a new US hosting company (http://www.servage.net), and have found it to be exceedingly slow on South African connections (where most of my user base are from). I am not sure if it applies to all connections, but so far all ADSL users as well as users from the UKZN have had extremely slow speeds. I have found my own connection speed on the site rather slow, and I am on 4mbit, so I have to wonder what the 384 guys are dealing with.

I have contacted my hosting company to see if it is perhaps something on their side that they can sort out, but alas it appears to be within the clutches of the demon. Telkom :(

Here is a traceroute to my site (http://www.the-bored.net)

-------------------

Is there any way I could get hold of Telkom and ask them to check out why connections to my site in particular are so slow? I know this is probably the most hopeful thing concerning Telkom you have ever heard, but I am kinda desperate.

Not sure but if the leg including "jfk" is in new york and your site is hosted in the us then it looks like its going SA > USA > Germany > USA which could explain some of the latency.

It doesn't, Cogentco has a peering system which includes Versatel.de. It is possible that the datacentre it goes through could be a Versatel.de datacentre hooked up to their network. But as far as I could see from checking the Cogentco website, my traffic is not being routed via Germany (as that would be incredibly silly). Also after chatting to one of the Servage staff members, I was told that according to their traceroutes and checks it appears the latency occurs within Telkom (the worst place possible).

3 * * 19 ms nngy-ip-er-1-fe-9-0-1-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.10.90]
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 474 ms 471 ms 474 ms ny-ip-dir-globalc-pos-3-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.18.97]

The biggest latency jump occurs between nngy-ip-er-1-fe-9-0-1-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za and
474 ms ny-ip-dir-globalc-pos-3-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za. So it is definetely Telkom to blame here.

Gotta go local

I know it costs alot more but if you want a fast site then you have to go local. We put up some pics of a student cocttail evening, (http://www.wynsam.co.za/youngprofessionals.htm) if we wanted them to load quick enough then it had to be local. Costs more but you dont have a choice.

Nice subtle advertising :p

But that is not the case. The old host I had, also US, had no problems with speed, everything was great. I am not prepared to pay through my ass for local hosting when I can get 110GB webspace for R90 a month.

But either way, is there anyone I can contact to see if they can sort it out?

You have to be joking:D . You want telkom to fix a problem to make international hosting accetable? Why would they when they can charge you more for local?

Actually when and if ever local becomes "free" like the new ICASA regulations stipulate, will it mean that local hosting rates will come down?

Loads quite fast for me too. On a 4Mbs line.

Compared to my site : hetzner SA host

One expects the local host to be faster, but yours is not bad right now so maybe the problem has been fixed.
