agree with all - amounts pretty much to an eloquent statement of the obvious

[duncan is probably also a whole lot cheaper than the presidential committee to run]

Great to see they are discussing these things.

I would have thought that they would have invited prominent industry leaders like the CEOs of companies like IS, Vodacom etc to also participate ... maybe they did but I only see Ester and Mark's names. These international names are great for high profile hob-nobbing but when push comes to shove the local industry surely knows best what they need to see from government? Don't mind Mark and Ester coming along for the ride but Mbeki should be talking to the local industry IMO.

theres no way the government will give up its share of Telkom or InfraCo. According to them state ownership means, that the its in the best interest of the people even though we know they just want the profits. Logical decisions like the ones Duncan made elude out government no matter how obvious they are made but hey we can always hope.

Duncan raised a couple of valid points.

Would be great if these can be implemented and adhered to by all the players.

Further...

I'd like to add the following:

The ANC should reveal who of their members bought what part of the Thintana stake. I believe that there is either a major overlap between this cabal and members of the government, or they have major influence over gov policy.

Remember, the ANC as a party came into power with empty coffers. The sale of the Thintana stake offered a golden opportunity to enrich not only the gov itself through its 38-odd% shareholding, but now also the ANC directly.

Therefore, every day that Telkom's monopoly is extended whether de facto or de jure means millions more into the coffers of the ruling party...and oh! how the sound of those coins must be sweet music to the ears of the patriarchs!!

Is there actualy an InfraCo to sell? Isnt it all just pie in the sky and some borowed resources?
I could be swayed but currently I dont have too much of a problem with Government (The People) owning part of Telkom, its a nice cash cow (specialy linked to Vodacom profits) and the money is useful for government coffers (when spent well and acountably) however, they need to stop the meddling protectionism and open up true unfettered competition. Ironic how the term "free market economy" is anything but that.

I want to become a journalist, and get paid to state the obvious in a delayed manner. Then I can also go to press junkets and dinners and meet lotsa people. I should have done it a long time ago
