Hi all,

So I keep getting asked why I am NOT using Twitch to stream - so I waited to 5am to run this test.

See results below.

Doesn't matter WHAT server I choose, even the ones with high quality - If I stream in 1080p or even 720p - the "dropped frame rates" are so high. :(
With YouTube Gaming - it's 0 on 1080p @ 60FPS

I've yet again TWEETED to Twitch that we need servers in ZA but I guess I'm pissing into the wind.

I hate to say it because they sponsor you but that looks like a RSAWEB issue, I don't know how they route things but there's no way your speeds to South America and Italy/Portugal should be higher than the speed to the London server.

Maybe you can go over to the fibre section and ask people to test their fibre with Twitch, you can ask in one of the already started threads or you can create a new thread where you link the bandwidth tester and ask people to test using their backbone and ISP.

Hi bud, this is the reply I got from RSAWEB tech guys regarding the issues;

Hi Dylan

I hope you're doing well. Since our chat yesterday I have been extensively testing and liaising with some of my colleagues who are serious gamers to find out more about their experience on Twitch and gaming in general on our networking platform.

To give you an overview we checked two live gaming/streaming platforms namely gaming.youtube.com and twitch.com as he has accounts on both environments. We checked the Twitch live gaming/streaming and the game we viewed was Overwatch and quality set to "source" we could see good graphics with lagging here and there which according to my colleague would've just made him cancel the whole stream for obvious reasons you can probably relate to.He mentioned the following" with lagging on this level I'd miss some good moments in the game."

We then tested the live stream/game via youtube's channel on 1080p with 60 frames per second and it was amazing. No lag, no stutters. The game we were busy streaming was Horizon Zero Dawn. The guy playing literally got 1000 views as we watched. The difference between these two platforms are very simple. Youtube have servers based locally thus resulting in very low latency and causing the experience to be great. All Twitch's servers are based abroad and latency plays a huge role in the experience you're having regardless of the speed of the connectivity as we saw similar results.

There are some other things we could take into consideration such as frame rate which can either be affected by in-game settings or hardware ie.
specifications of your machine you're using, all of which I am sure you're aware of. To conclude, nothing on our network infrastructure is causing the lagging as no shaping is being done. Its simply a case of high latency which comes down to where these games are served as when compared to local servers. We hope this information helps.

Thanking you in advance.

So I pretty much was forced to change to YouTube Gaming for my streaming sessions.

I don't know if he just worded it poorly but it sounds like they only watched a stream, they didn't actually stream to Twitch and YouTube.

I'm just telling you what I know, with South Africa's undersea cables etc the London server should give you the fastest speed by far, in your own tests you can even see London has the lowest latency, it should also have the fastest speed.

If you do a Speedtest and you choose a London server what are your results?

I'll do a test for you later and post the results - I'm currently at work at the moment. :(

Then it makes zero sense why the Twitch server shouldn't give you the same speeds and there is no way the 160ms latency would give issues on a stream.

Streaming to Twitch when you're not partnered you will more than likely use 720P60 at 3500Kbps, there is something going on with the stream between RSAWEB and Twitch somewhere.

Can you run this in cmd for me please: tracert live.twitch.tv

See my results, at hop 7 you can clearly see it leave South Africa and by hop 8 it reaches the London Twitch server.

Yours never seems to leave South Africa, if you check the IP's you get from hop 7, those IP's belong to Dimension Data in Johannesburg, I also don't know why your hop 4 is so much, that's still on the RSAWEB network, it should be <10ms.

I'm going to e-mail the technician at RSAWEB and ask for feedback.

It looks like it's going through some sort of internal VPN or proxy, it's really weird.

The technician replied;

I am looking into your issue and have read the comments. Let me investigate and I will get back to you before close COB today.

I would prefer a RSAWEB "REP" replying directly here... but regardless, I'll post replies for all to see.

Hi all,

Thanks to those who PM'd me about the stream being "laggy" tonight - I'm not sure what was going on but I could see it was "laggy" on OBS because the connection was going from GREEN to RED and had 9.8% dropped frames - It did get better but still had issues.

Once it started with these issues - I'm sure you guys noticed I was getting very irritated as it messes with the quality of the stream - I'm going to let RSAWEB know and see if it improves but with that said, I do appreciate the feedback.

So post tonight's stream, I got a message from one of my subscribers who offered to buy 2 of the items off my wishlist.
So thanks to him; Diablo 3 (PS4) and Wasteland 2: Director's Cut Edition (PS4) are inbound.

Loving the support guys!
