...it's like sucking honey through a straw.

I recently got a second Mac and am using my Mega 100WR router from Telkom to network the two Macs.

I have no problem finding either machine from the other across the network, but when I transfer files between them it takes like an hour or so to move 2Gigs. Is that normal? Are there some settings I can change in the router to speed things up a bit?

I'm very new to networks so if you can go easy on me that would be dandy. Thanks! :D

That's about right... Couple hundred kB/s transfer rate?

The reason is because wireless networks are FAR from ideal. You could possibly up the throughput by eliminating interference and multipath as far as possible, and by introducing compression. But otherwise wired networks are still the way to go.

ok few things;

1. make sure ALL devices incl access point are on Auto channels. So if there is interference it will hop. remove microwaves, cordless phones and other 2.4ghz things from right next-to the AP.

2. Try "forcing" a wifi speed, like 54G, or lower - rather than auto as this can keep "hunting" for a good speed. Also, turn off older protocols u dont need like b+g etc.

3. If you have windows vista machines, google on how to disable the vista proprietory compression file copy rubbish thing. Just search for "copy files on vista too slow" there's a million articles about it.

4. exclude the folder you are copying from antivirus scanners, and turn it back on once the file is copied.
