I'm supper amped. Got my Xiaomi Max 2 days ago from Takealot for R4500. It rocks. I made the jump from the Galaxy Note 3, which was 12 grand, 3 years ago to a very cheap top of the range Xiaomi max. I thought it will be inferior to the Samsung due to being less than half the price of the current top of the range Samsung but I was wrong, so wrong. I can wax lyrical about it but you can read the reviews on CNET, Trusted Reviews etc.
My favourites are: an amazing battery life! The screen is big, very big so YouTube and reading in general is a cinch. Even with the big screen it is very thin and less bulky than my Note 3.It's fast, very fast, going in and out of apps is a snap. It has several built in features which helped me from loading tons of 3rd party apps, like speed tests, antivirus, battery management, cleaner, data usage, app lock and many more.
Worth the 4500 bucks! Goodbye Samsung, LG, Moto, goodbye Sony!

I also made the jump from samsung to Xiaomi about a year ago. Started on the Redmi Note 2, and upgraded about a week ago to the new Redmi Note 4, and boy is it a great phone. These devices really deilver great value for money!

Bought my daughter Xiaomi Note 3 (think 3 or 2)..

AWESOME freaking phone. It's amazing... dual sim card FTW. Beautiful phone, the speed is amazing, big screen etc. It needs to take market so we can get phone covers that fit 100% (my daughter wants).

I will buy myself one too for sure. R3k for the phone about a 6 months ago.

Just sucks they keep removing features like early bird alarm on the mi band and also the ability to disable build in apps on Miui 8.

I hope it does not take over the market. I remember when Huawei phones first came to SA they were super cheap. Now their phones are in the same price range as Samsung. As long as Xiaomi stays relatively unknown they will keep their prices low enough to compete.

Thank you very much, was going to ask about these phones. Just one question for those clued up with the brand, are there major differences between the Mi5 and Mi Max? Is it worth the little extra for the Mi5? Which one is later model?

Get a cover for it ASAP... The back cover is very thin and fragile glass and can easily shatter - I know from personal experience.

I'm still out on my Redmi2 - was very stable on 4.4.4 - not so much on 5.1.1 (and I had to do the update because bluetooth wasn't working properly on 4.4.4) - if it wasnt for that I'd go back to 4.4.4

Do they release new android versions for the phones as new android versions are released? How often does xiaomi send out updates?

Only the high end Mi range gets updates timely. On the Remdi range you're lucky if you get any updates at all. You still get security updates. Even phones circa 2012 still get security updates. Only the Pixel phone and Sony/Motorola phones get timely updates anyway and Miui got things long before stock android got it like a permission manager, battery saving, clear all apps etc.

It's MIUI that's constantly updated instead of the base Android version. MIUI generally pulls down features from higher versions of Android and enables it on older hardware where possible. You should also take a look at Meizu. They launched locally a couple of weeks back and offer better backup service and wider range of covers and screen protectors.

Cannot find the local meizu site. Who stocks them and do they provide support in SA?
