I've had it from the start, played it quite a bit. Dunno just don't feel like it.
It's pretty good, but I would not go as far as you went and say "best action rpg ever made"

That's just a serious fanboy thing to say :p

I'll give Grim Dawn a shot (just a bit busy atm). For a game that's 'not finished yet' it's pretty darn impressive.

Copa IS a fanboy!

haha ye think we've realized that already some time ago.

Pretty decent game. I've had it since one could way,way back. Don't think anyone around here knew about it then or well never talked about it.

It has improved so much since it was released, and in a month or so it's going to be magnitudes better!

Fanboy indeed. It's a ****ing great game, really.

The info in the OP is kind of outdated, which is why I suggested perhaps not creating this thread until the expansion comes out. I think I will amend the original thread, and then you can update this one?

Yup - just ping me and I'll do the necessary - in fact post in here and I will magically replace the OP :D

Fired it up on Sunday...finished act1 last night.

I must say very interesting game indeed and I actually enjoy it. Not sure about the best action rpg tag. I've not had much exp with the action rpg genre but if someone says there is a better game than this then I want to dig into that as well.

There is not alot of information to go on for new players as myself but other than that i look forward to the many sleepless nights:D

What are the odds of being semi successful without trading?

You can certainly play without trading, although you will not as powerful as you could be (since with trading you obviously maximise your currency gain, and can search specifically for that perfect item).

There are also various things coming in the expansion to make self-found easier.

Personally, I am not obsessed with trading at all, but it's fun to list your stuff and be able to buy what you need when and if you need it.

Love or hate trading that is something people want but also one of the biggest issue the game or any such game has. To play at the top end you need to extensively make use of trading.
So it gets to the point where it was with D2. Forum trading, spamming, bot trading etc etc.

If you don't do it to that extend you are left behind. Not a problem if you just casually play the game.

@copacetic yes I have not played it in quite some time. I'm not denying it's a pretty cool game with a crazy skill tree and item things.
I just always felt like the look and feel of the game had something missing to keep me at it for a long long time

Best is obviously very subjective, and I said it mostly to get a rise out of people, hehe.

There's plenty of info, actually:

Since ol' Mannercookie got banned from D3 he's been dabbling in PoE.

I caught some of his stream last night I think and he said he would be creating some youtube vids doing some comparisons between D3 and PoE in lead up to the PoE patch. If he manages to keep things objective then they could be very useful for any of us D3 players who are looking for something new.

On face value I think I'll skip, but his vids may provide some info which will get me to change my mind.

Top X reason why I love PoE as a game:

1) Aside from story, it takes the best aspect of FFVII and puts it into an action RPG setting. Linked socketted items with Coloured skill gems that level as you use them in combat. If you liked the Materia system from FFVII, then this is the closest you can get to finding the same system in an updated game.

2) The skill tree is immense. At first it looks quite daunting. Then as you realise that it is a lot of highways, with important scenic points along the way. You simply have to decide which scenic points are your target, and find the most efficient path between them.

3) The number of skills in the game is pretty damn good, especially the way you can modify them to be more aoe focused, or more single target focused, by simply combining them with different support gems.

4) The items lore is surprisingly rich, for those of us that enjoy a bit of backstory and history to our game world.

5) The trolling builds..... Let me just say, that when wanting to replay the game with a build that seems completely outlandish, PoE lets you do some awesome things. Like deciding to build a passifist. There are enough counterattack skills in the game that you can literally build a passive dmg tank for fun. He wont have the clear speeds of those active builds, but the fact that you can build this way, quite respectably, is awesome.

6) Resistances are D2'esqu. Far easier to understand. If I have 100 resistance to an element, I take no damage from it. 75 Resist = a quarter dmg and so on. It means that if you find a fantastic item with max resistance rolls in 3 resistances, you have more wiggle room in your other gear items to get different stats. VS the current D3 model which is basically. Get the highest numbers possible, on everything, for everything, because the dmg you recieve just keeps scaling in a strange way vs your 2395 Fire resistance..... It makes gearing far more 3 dimensional and much more rewarding.

7) GGG (Grinding Gear Games). This is perhaps one for the people that started out back in the early Beta days. But GGG started as a small group of guys that loved D2 and the action RPG genre, and wanted to make a game to pay homage to the classics. They found a way to make a fantastic game, on very little budget, that they released for free, on the most amazing F2P model you will find anywhere. You pay for cosmetics, that is just about it. The only thing of consequence that you may have to fork out some money for is a few extra stash tabs. But that cost vs what a game of this calibre is worth, is next to nothing.

All Mc does these days is dis Diablo 3.
People seems to be getting tired of his moaning and not following him anymore.

To be fair, that's what the most streamers do and a large % of the current playerbase. D3 is a love-hate relationship...

Anyway, I just want someone to break PoE down for me so I can see if its worth playing. I dont want to spend the time to figure it out myself tbh.

1 follow a cookie cutter build at first
2 do not pick up everything
3 pick up yellow items and stuff that has linked sockets
4 don't craft in the beginning - play wif stuff you picked up
5 don't pick up everything
6 don't pick up everything

Befriend Copa in game

Sure, but try and find that from someone who is not bias about things. PoE is a very good game. It will be all if the look and feel of it is for you and what you are looking for.

MC was banned from D3 and since then he has nothing good to say about it at all (clearly sour grapes), while he loved it before he got banned. I enjoyed watching him for D3, but atm I don't like watching him talking about anything.

I looked for some people who had something to say about Grim Dawn for instance and found some guys who played a tone of D3 and a ton of PoE but who has also been playing the early access GD. They went into some detail etc.
At the end of the day they loved all these games, even though they different on the way they do things. They had fair opinions about the games and did not call the game they used to love complete crap because of something that happened.

Having a person like that say at the end of the video that atm they will play GD as the game of choice from the bunch for this and that reason gives me a better feel for things.

haha, thanks for the breakdown, but I want info on the larger meta. Basically I want to whether or not I'll enjoy PoE more than something else without actually having to play it...

I agree, which is why I said if he manages to stay objective. But, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna give it a skip anyway and my interest is still pretty low so I'll probably not even watch his vids.
