The dmg is nice so far though. Using either EK with Ring of blades or Spark with its threshold to apply a projectile based nova dmg. Which is to ensure that my positioning is not too important for the general trash. or if spawns sneak up behind.

This will let you down after Act 7 or so. My league starter was a Poet's Pen, went with EK and phys wander, this way I could scale both types of damage with shared nodes (projectile damage, spell damage). Overall I think blade fall works out better.
I am currently running my 4th character of the league which is based on the pencromancer (from the creator of Poet's Pen) and that is working quite well. Although levelling with VD/Unearth feels quite faster, the indirect defence from Summon Skeletons is nice.
the pencromancer one i am using is summon skeletons and dark pact
Ah that one. Okay I heard of that one. How are you finding it?
I am still levelling, not much higher level than you at the moment;
Downside
Slower gameplay compared to my wander
Only sustain is LGoH
Upside
The skeletons provide distraction for mobs/bosses, so LGoH is fine.
Very cheap, 2 Poet's Pens (bought one for 7c in beginning of the league, found one last week)
Cospri's for additional curse and poison to enable vile toxins (45% more damage at 9 poisons) using culling strike in the meantime.
Going to spec into MoM soon so will have 1.3k life, and I think about 1.2k mana not even lvl 45 yet.
The skeleton distraction makes playing a lot easier, which is something that is not apparent when looking at other Pen builds (VD/BF/EK)
Anyway, just spitballing right now. rambling away.
I believe that for every skill in use when DW, you need 2 APS in order for the procs to work correctly. If you have too many, it will not proc the skills correctly, and if you have a lot more than needed, it actually breaks the mechanic. Tarkecat has a video of this up on youtube and there might be a forum post on this as well.
One thing to keep in mind.
And to make matters worse, is to find a game with comparable experience in terms of isometric ARPGIt pains me to say this, but I'm struggling to enjoy PoE as much as I used to. It's still without a doubt the best game I've ever played though.
I don't like how trading and playing the trading game is a 'shortcut' to extreme power so quickly, and if you play the trading game correctly, extreme wealth - With the game necessarily being balanced around these realities. Shaped mapping, sextants and now sticking Elder Guardians onto static maps are not systems I like. Of course I don't need to play that way, but my attempt this league to unlock the whole Atlas was/is just an absolute exercise in frustration.
I also think GGG need to slow down, and work on expanding on and improving existing systems (prophecies, etc) and also do a comprehensive polish and balance cycle. I am aware that this doesn't fit into their business model and that they are of course constantly adding and improving in any event.
Anyway, it's hard to articulate, but the reality is, I'm just not inclined to play much, which sucks.

I often feel the same way Copa. It is a sad feeling when you think that away about a game that you know is really fantastic. I think it is about the time investment on playing the game vs time investment on playing the market. The former lets you enjoy the actual game, but you need to do the latter in order to have the power to enjoy the ENTIRE game.
You sort of have to have both the time and the enjoyment of both aspects of the game in order to succeed. And if you cannot enjoy the market fiddling, then you cannot really enjoy the whole game.
