This morning my connection really took off !
I managed to get (wait for this - sit down - else you're gonna fall down), a whole whopping 0.9Kb/s off the mintek tower this morning.

When I called the retards at the help desk and told them that this idiot thing was so slow that I managed to download an whopping 5MB in an hour - the Super Intelligent and brainy person at the help desk (Carlos was his name), seem to thing 5MB was extremely fast...........

I think I've figured these guys out now. They're going to make the connection slooooooooooowwwwww down to the speed of a 2400 modem, then just when we're used to it, bump it up to a blazing 9600 , figuring that we're going to be dazzled by this speed increase.

Yes and then they will say the average use for a month is 1gig (if we are lucky) and make that a new policy too.

Well don't their supposed network upgrades or whatever end tomorrow? Does that mean we can hope to see better speeds tomorrow. I mean soon the news of these speeds will get out and all the users on dial-up will start laughing at us, and DOS'ing us. It's a sad state of affairs

Well...looks like our super fast 256k lines are now hard capped to 21kbits/sec on any form of international traffic.

Hate to disagree, but look at this... (8 threads running)
URL: http://www.desknow.com/downloads/DeskNow.exe
Current speed: 31,809 bytes/sec

It's been running like this for 4 minutes now. I'd love to know how different users can see such vastly different speeds on the same package...

See how blindingly fast this torrent was - it had 16 seeds 34 peers 690 KB/s total bandwidth of which I got 0.5 KB/s. [:0][:0] Not bad for 12 hours.

You know... it doesn't even help to bitch anymore... I don't even BOTHER phoning the helldesk because I know what kind of an answer I can expect. Just one thing that really pisses on my battery: They keep on hammering on the contention ratios - how in **** can it drop from 25KB/sec downloads to 3KB/sec in ONE ****ING WEEK OFF THE SAME GOD DAMN TOWER!?!? Are they meaning to tell us that all of a sudden 27 other people signed up for this **** service on the SAME node as you? BULL****!!!!!!

Look what we pay for bandwidth
"Pointing out that the cheapest broadband access from Telkom costs approximately R1.75/Kbps while Sentech's MyWireless is R2.93/Kbps, the organisation claims that this is 286% and 480% more expensive than a comparable offering from an Egyptian ISP."

from http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/internet/2004/0408251104.asp?A=%&O=F

Sentech's cost has dramatically increased of late.

Thats totally skewed. The 3GB cap makes it effectively quite a lot less Kbps. The impression is that Telkom is cheaper (which it aint) but on vee uvver hand Darren, with the current hard capping (on 128k im getting a nice solid 2KB/sec with browsing+emule+bittorrent running) it could be a close one. Maybe something like Telkom R1200/(3GB/30*24)=R1200/1.15kbps (effective)=R1043/Kbps and then for Sentech R650/24kbps = R27/Kbps. So even running slowly, Sentech is much cheaper.

I think its both. They would not have a problem if we were hard capped to 8KB/sec. 2.5KB/sec is just fckn ridiculous. How long is this going to go on? Where is the extra bandwidth now going? There must be some 1500 128kers and to hard cap each one to 20kbps means there is 1500*80kbps that must go somewhere.

The fun part is that we still have to pay full rates always while we get an eigth of the service. And they expect us to be happy.

So effectively now (since they have a delay-as predicted-on 256k as well) *EVERYONE* is hard capped to 2.5KB/sec. I guess its just too slow for people to come and moan in the forum.

I eventually gave up trying last night. Just about everything gave up. What is so weird is how quick my email remained. Then again, it is with MightyMail, which is fewer hops away than Sentech [:D] since it is hosted by InfoSat. LOL

The things is, what are the alternatives right now? I need an online connection (and fast too!), but the only option is ADSL right? And who wants to be locked into another contract AGAIN?

Arrgghhh.

Actually ADSL does not have a contract if you don't take their "special offer" of the modem....
