Its like when they implemented these choke points in some Waterkloof street to stop the heavy flow of traffic throught that suburb, it became so messed up (30min to do 100metres, just aint other roads to use) that the then mayor ordered immediate removal of the one on the most heavy used street. The other have stayed and arent too much of a problem.

What astounds me is the complete lack of sensible thinking in government circles.
Not just with this idea but dozens of others.
Why is it that most of us can tell that something isn't going to work without having to experiment? Do "native" South Africans have an IQ deficit problem?

What they really need to do is widen the N1 to 6 lanes in each direction as well as upgrade all the exit points. Sure it'll cost a heck of a lot but the local economy would do a lot better and generate more taxes for them.
What would the Gauteng economy be like if the N1 was never built?

It seems to me that they're just trying to stick band-aids on everything instead of facing up to the facts and doing something constructive about it.

We need a second highway to provide additional entry point into the cities.

Such a highway was planned many years ago - by the Apartheidgovernment. Therefore it won't ever be built.

Old Joburg/PTA Road would be a good starting point...

I still believe this car pool lane can work, once people actually start car pools. IMO 1 person per vehicle is a waste of space and it puts unneccessary pressure on the environment. Just organise a lift club with the people you work with and it could make a big difference.

It wont work here for the forseeable future. Some reasons:

1. 90% of South Africans don't care about the law and violate most of the rules of the road already.
2. 90% of South Africans don't care about anyone but themselves.
3. There are people who insist on driving at 80km/h in the middle lane, no matter what the traffic conditions are like.
4. There are too many vehicles on the roads that wouldn't pass a road-worth test in any civilized country.
5. There is just too much traffic to all share 2 lanes.
6. How many people actually live any where near the people they work with AND keep the same schedule?

BTW, mods can we merge this with the thread in the news section?

What about people who need to travel out to site who need to use the highway, meetings in the other city, not living close to people who work near your workplace, etc.? Do they need to look for a carpool everytime they need to hit the road?

It's retarded IMO, because now everybody is forced to share the same lanes as trucks and buses (who are the major cause of traffic in the first place - ever experienced a truck travelling 43km/h trying to overtake a truck travelling 42km/h?) and in the process creating even more congestion than before.

If anything, I would say that a better solution is if all trucks are banned during peak hours. Owners of trucks could work around the ban by planning their logistics better.

This afternoon Jhb -> Pta is a perfect example why this is a **** idea. One accident combined with the HOV lane (only open to HOVs) and the N1 north was reduced to one freaking usable lane.

hmm... Guess it's one more shining example of our inept government ****ing things up again...

My money is on pretty much everyone giving the HOV a big finger and driving in it anyway. R200 isn't that much these days (apparent fine). Just wait till taxis containing just the driver use it (oh wait, they probably do already)

...

Do you honestly think that ?

Of 10 people you know about, 9 of them violate traffic rules and only care for themselves ?

Hov

Hi guys, I'm new on this forum. Well I personally think this HOV campaign is a complete waste of time and the tax payers money.
