N95 - WiFi issue

Another flaw uncovered in the N95. Below is a post I made on another forum, after extensive research. Seems like half the world is having this issue.

Hi,

I have searched and read up on this issue. After fiddling, trying things and attempting all the workarounds suggested (also for N80, E61, N93 - seems it's the case on all Nokia phones with WiFi) I have come to a conclusion that the problem lies in the handling of the DHCP handshake between the phone and the router.

I have a Billion router, and I will always get a "no gateway reply" if my IP settings are left in the automatic mode. If I enter the settings manually, I can surf no problem. Just to stress this point - I CONNECT to the WiFi network with no problems (i.e. I pass all the security checks etc). The problem is that the N95 does not want to automatically accept the DHCP settings as sent by the router.

The router DOES NOT do any MAC filtering, it has most up to date FW, etc etc. The phone is also running the latest FW (11)

My problem is this - at public hotspots I will not have the luxury of knowing the IP pool, gateway settings, etc.

Has anyone worked out this problem - i.e. why does DHCP not work (since that is clearly the issue) and how to fix this?

EDIT: Just noticed that there are a signifcant amount of people who have not had problems with this, until they updated to FW v11. Unfortunately I have not tried WiFi with the old FW (I upgraded hours after getting the phone) but it is possible that this is a FW bug.

No, the update is not available for SA. I have debranded the phone and used generic EURO1 FW.

I'm inclined to think it's a FW fault.

The wifi problem is not only related to the N95. My previous phone, N80, worked perfect when I used the wifi. After I updated to the latest firmware I had the same problem that the N95 have and that is to manually input the IP settings etc.

After doing that it works 100%. I don't have problems using wifi access at Mugg&Bean etc..

As I said, it seems to be the problem on every Nokia with WiFi. Just as a matter of interest, how do you get the IP settings for Mugg & Bean?

Personally I am furious that this doesn't work - I am going to make a big fuss about this.

im lost...what u guys mean that u have to manually enter IP ?

I use my N95 to connect to my wireless Telkom Mega 100WR router and connected to my brothers wireless hotspot at his farm...

am i missing something?

EDIT: now i see it...i think so...are u guys saying that the newer FW gives this problem? i am using the original V10 firmware and have no problems

Well, when I'm at Mugg&Bean I can connect to the wifi hotspot without any problems.;)

My N95 still is running v10. I will wait for v12 to become available in SA. It looks like a decent upgrade.;)

Haven't tried it yet. I'm looking for a good MSN Messenger for the N95.

Do you need a router to network a N95 and a laptop with wireless lan?

I have a Telkom ADSL 5102G Router and I connect to the internet without any problems on my N95.

I installed Fring now but it wont connect. I tried GPRS and WLAN but it wont connect.

One of the reasons, N95 works fine at airports and mugg&bean is due to the open access security encryption and not due to DHCP. I have never had any problems at these wifi hotspots.

In my netgear router N95 worked great with open access (no access key), so I played around the security encryption and got it to work in 64 bit mode. I did not have to manually set IP settings and IP settings are still in auto mode.

Yes Fring is amazing stuff on a wifi phone, i use it for msn, skype and truphone.

Cheers

As i was saying, i'm convinced that the v11 fw has a buggy implementation of the 802.11 stack, wrt the DHCP handshake. The problems I'm experiencing (and most other ppl running this fw) have nothing to do with security. I'm running 64 bit WEP on my router and if i input the ip settings manually it works, if i leave it on auto it doesn't, all with the same key.

hmm, worked for me, did you first register on the site?
all i done was:
-register on site they send you a sms
-open sms on phone and click link
-when i opened the link i selected my home wifi connection
-app downloaded/installed
-when you open the app call the "fring test call" contact to make sure all's working

you could network a N95 and a laptop without a router, just define the wifi connection as ad-hoc, i guess it would depend on what you want to do.
having a wifi router makes life much easier though:)

@Vlad: was googling a bit and looks like some people were experiencing the same problems as you before the firmware upgrade, as a test take off security on your router, delete that access point from your phone and try again...

FYI my security settings on my router and phone are WEP128 HEX

Nope, fring doesn't work for me. Mig33 works 100%. Can't understand why.

Vlad...my wifi is working perfectly and we did the same upgrade....must be a router issue......go to your nearest mugg and bean and test your phone.
