Back in our days, we used to farm 3 tons of tomato in just 1 sq.meter. land. Those were the days when 1 dollar was 1 rand.

Although, I must appreciate farmers of SA. Despite having all the land taken by ANC, they have managed this feat. Are they using Aero-ponic method?

This farming miracle suspiciously looks like people paying most of the SA tax despite having no jobs due to BEE.
With prices going up crazy it is easy. Production comes down 20% increase your price 30% voila, record high sales.
Not saying that is the case, sure there are farms that were appropriated that does work, especially if there were a handholding period for knowledge, but we hear and see so many that failed. Production in SA is down. Te fancy stuff that is wanted outsid ethe borders are doing well, but our staple is dwindling down.

I suspect the problem here is largely to do with middle man that supply our local grocery stores. The price on the self is pretty much the same so can't image that there is any more profit in it to ship stuff halfway across the world. Especially not fruit with a sort lifespan that requires cooled shipping.

The grocery stores margins are public. It's not a lot. Farmers say they don't get money in SA. Somewhere in the middle is a problem.

@ShaunSA - we found THE authentic indian guy, even more authentic than @Polymathic . Try banana in a cauliflower curry next time or mash it in your bunny chow.
I think Sudanese or Somalis have ripe bananas with their savoury dishes.

I much rather add some sweetness to my curries with a kumquat or sweet and sour lime pickle.
