Nanomachines which can drill into cancer cells, killing them in just 60 seconds, have been developed by scientists.

The tiny spinning molecules are driven by light, and spin so quickly that they can burrow their way through cell linings when activated.

In one test conducted at Durham University the nanomachines took between one and three minutes to break through the outer membrane of prostate cancer cell, killing it instantly.

The 'motor' is a rotor-like chain of atoms that can be prompted to move in one direction, causing the molecule to rotate at high speed.

Dr Robert Pal of Durham University said: "We are moving towards realising our ambition to be able to use light-activated nanomachines to target cancer cells such as those in breast tumours and skin melanomas, including those that are resistant to existing chemotherapy.

“Once developed, this approach could provide a potential step change in non-invasive cancer treatment and greatly improve survival rates and patient welfare globally."

As I am involved in this subject due to my wife's cancer, I have done much research over the past year and found many "new breakthroughs" that account for nothing. This will never be implemented. The old chemo and radiation will carry on like forever.

Sometimes the media gets wind of preliminary medical and pharmaceutical research, and publishes the news before said treatments have gone through the many years of testing that are required before they are approved as effective and safe [with caveats] for use.

Some of the "medical breakthroughs" reported on don't make it past testing.

I am afraid I have to agree with this, but my reason is becuase I do not believe big pharma will allow for it, the cure for cancer and other diseases probably already exists locked up in some lab controlled by Pfizer or Gilead Sciences.

Are you being serious?

Big problem is to a) get the machines inside a host, b) find their way to cancer cells (only), c) destroy them [done], d) go inert or exit the host.

So they've figured out only 1/4th of the problem. Good research, but still probably 10-20+ years away from use (if all the steps turn out to be possible and there are no other complications)

So basically this?

This will reach mainstream sooner if you could use it to asplode someone you don't like's liver, give your political opponents a case of lung bleed, or instead of aciding an uber you'd be able to dissolve the solid bones in his head instead..
