The web is abuzz about a new space race between the USA and China as to who will get to put man on the moon again the soonest. According to the US President Elect, Barack Obama will be making it a personal priority to break down the barriers between NASA and the Pentagon in order to facilitate a quicker progression onto the lunar surface. Sounds like somebody has spotted a stick in the spokes of the wheel of progress.

You might be wondering why the links between NASA and the Pentagon needs to be streamlined; well it boils down to technology. According to Obama plans to beat China in the race back to the moon using yet still classified rocket technology in the hands of the US military, which is apparently way ahead of that developed by NASA who says it will only be flight ready in 2015. Obama clearly wants the USA back on the moon before that date.

What is exciting about all this is that the time to dream seems to have returned in a way that we only did in the late 60’s and early 70’s. If this all comes down in the same way when the USA, Russia and China used to compete in space back then, then we are in for a treat and a possible manned exploration of Mars!

Many experts believe the moon to be the stepping-stone to Mars.
