JOHANNESBURG - The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has lied in a press release stating that Moneyweb’s journalist Malcolm Rees has misquoted it in a piece revealing lending probes into major lenders.

In the statement the NCR contends that the body never revealed the individual names of major listed banks and other micro-lenders, which are the target of the NCR’s investigations.

Read the full statement here.

An audio recording of the interview between Rees and Zweli Zakwe, the head of the NCR’s investigative unit, clearly shows that Zakwe had named the individual banks.

These include ABIL, Capitec and FNB.

In a subsequent interview Rees called Zakwe to inform him that he would be publishing the names of the banks to which Zakwe agreed.

This move was taken once it had become clear that Zakwe had informed Bloomberg that Abil and Capitec where being investigated.

Rees was at the Marikana swoop on Monday, at the invitation of the NCR, and was able to observe which micro-lenders had been targeted in that particular operation.

The recording was made to ensure the accuracy of the report.
