Hey folks, I recently got a nedbank mastercard and it's not being accepted anywhere online using international currency.
Speaking to nedbank, online transactions are enabled for the card, it's not being blocked by fraud detection, etc.

I've tried to buy some airtime for my UK simcard through my UK mobile provider, and it says the card payment fails.
I've tried linking to paypal, fails, please contact your bank
Tried subscribing to reddit premium, fails, please contact your bank
Humble bundle game store, fails

Steam & takealot, works fine, not sure if because these are local services using ZAR?

Anyone else seeing these issues?

Why dont you get a Monzo account or something and just transfer into there?

Last time I tried Monzo, I couldn't sign up for it outside of the UK, and I've been using paypal for as long as I can remember.

If youre a citizen and you atleast just know somebody there that can send the card to you via courier etc it shouldnt be an issue.

Appreciated, Probably time to use monzo & get a card, which I will definitely do next time I'm back over, But I was asking if anyone has had problems transacting internationally, I've got tons of payments waiting on paypal but paypal isn't accepting my card, nor is EE UK, Reddit, humble, wikipedia donation, etc

Speaking to nedbank, they can see all failed transactions I've done with this card (me using wrong CVV when I first got it, expiry date wrong when I misttyped, etc) when I've done payments with it in the past, but they dont see any payment requests coming in from these services at all. I've phoned them 3 times now, each time being put through to all their internal teams who are all saying the above.

I wonder if there's a problem with international payment gateways or mastercard or something like that, but I've been trying to buy airtime on EE for weeks and it always fails.

they can be blocked if you hit your 1m sda. but fnb is blocking loads of international payments now as well due to "covid" bs!

Have you tried contacting Nedbank?
Literally right there on the second line of my first post lol. I did, they say they dont see any requests coming through. Phoned them 3 times now, spoke to about 6 or 7 different people who all say the same thing.

Lots of companies block cards from certain regions. They can pick that up from the BIN number of the card. First 6 digits of the card.

I can't topup my UK O2 number using any of my FNB cards and have to use my Monzo card.

I thought that too, but my payments to steam are international and I get the "international payment outside of SA steamgames dot com" warning SMS, I even get charged a currency conversion fee, that still works.

Vote with your wallet. Capitec has no currency conversion fees else there's FNB etc as well.

The merchant could be blocking all transactions from certain regions. Try another card if you have one.

If the merchant is declining it, Nedbank will not see the transactions on their side.

My Nedbank and Amex cards used to work for all services online in any country, then suddenly they just stopped. I just had to use my Discovery card for international transactions. I didn't have the time to enquire about he reasons.

You mentioned you typed incorrect credentials a few times, I'm wondering if they've possibly blocked your card or something along those lines for suspicious behavior occurring on your account?

I had a similar issue with fnb, turns out my limit for daily / monthly POS purchases ( online adds to it) was low

Just opened my Monzo account (thanks for reminding me of that by the way), but no, card isn't blocked, normal purchases work, used it literally 40 minutes ago on steam to check if it was blocked or not.

The Reserve Bank is also blocking all international debit/credit card transactions that are over R50 000.

I actually had massive issues recently with this. they didnt block 5 transactions over R50k that were "foreign" and the sarb queried it via FNB, all on CC
