So we have had some rotten luck the past 2 months. First the cistern in our 1 bathroom falls off the wall, flooding the passage and bedroom. Wooden floors naffed.

Put in a claim, they DRAG their feet, eventually they send a contractor to fix the toilet, great, now we wait for the floor quote. . and we wait and we wait.

As Murphy will have it, the pipe in the guest toilet bursts, flooding the damn bedroom and entrance hall. Seriously, I am over pipes and toilets at this point.

So eventually the bank sends an accesor, he gives the go ahead for all the damage to be repaired and we wait some more.

We then after chasing Nedbank for some answers, get told that in fact the damage caused by the cistern breaking is not covered and they not paying. The burst pipe however they will cover the damaged floors there.

Now I have pulled out my insurance book that they gave me and it clearly states that cisterns are covered. I mean this is seriously bs. I guess the only recourse would be the ombudsmen?

That would be your best bet. Why are you with Nedbank by the way?

Yeah, I left Nedbank about a month after signing the bond papers...

Broker was nearly half the price.

Did the same thing, was just easier...

Started shopping around the day I signed the papers and moved the very next month.

I guess my bond is with them so just went with their insurance.

I must look into that.

also you will save a ***** load (excuse the pun) if you go through a broker for household insurance.

The banks insurance usually goes onto your bond payment in an annual payment in advance and therefore you are paying interest on your insurance as well as your home.

I also canceled my Nedbank Insurance over crap like this. Double Excess charges, refusing to cover, etc.

I went with CIA for a fraction of the cost, and have had FAR better service.

Mine sure as hell doesn't either.....

House is tripping, fix it yourself, and if you don't and it burns down the house expect insurance not to pay out.

They wouldn't have paid, period.

I think you just got lucky, or they loaded your premium.

Moral of the story don't trust any insurance company..

Never deal with the insurance company you've a bond with or a vehicle. Rather go to a 3rd party instead and have peace of mind. Always read the policy thoroughly before signing on the dotted line. Also take pictures of how your house looks, electronics, televisions and attach it! That way if you do have a house break-in they've proof. Insurance companies want serial numbers etc, the list goes on and sometimes consumers don't actually take time to do an inventory of everything.

I never claimed ever from the insurance company always paid upfront a year in advance with interest which irritated. I did lodge a claim for a new geyser, 19 windows in total and the contractor said that the insurance won't pay but they did authorize everything. I think the contractor charged them over R10 grand just for the windows I didn't have to pay any excess whatsoever for the geyser or windows. They did send a contractor over for the wooden floors and the contractor wanted to charge an excess of R4000, did the job myself set me back R800.

Did have a burst pipe but I took the necessary steps to put a stoppers all over and as a precaution measure when going on holiday or out, always close the stopper. I heard of incidents where people come home and their home is flooded with water.

Well good news, the insurance have decided to pay. Irritating that you have to make waves before anyone is willing to do anything.

I had a similar hassle with them refusing to pay for a wooden staircase that was pulling away from the wall. I took the matter to the banking ombudsman to sort out.
