Story:

A mate and I had a bit of a fracas over whose car is quickest... (yes, booze was involved:p)

Using my excellent debating techniques I was able at least to set up some parameters.

His is a Golf Gti (swift in the city, I concede), mine is an Audi A6 (think: autobahn.)
I know he'll burn me between traffic lights but I maintain that he will eat dirt over a 1km stretch.

Now, I suspect that there will be a deluge of 'opinions' in this thread but what I really would like to know about is if anyone knows of a disused 1km (at least) stretch of road in or around CT - bear in mind that this information will effectively nullify any 'opinions' posted by providing empirical evidence.

Two things:
1.)It must be disused, not seldom frequented - we don't want to be breaking the law for the sake of our drunken ramblings and egos.
2.)Kind of part of point 1 - we don't want to hurt anyone and we'd obviously like to keep the danger at a minimum for ourselves and our cars ;)

...any ideas?

How about using a lonely airstrip somewhere? The R27 road north towards Saldanha past Koeberg should be OK too, especially during midweek. It's nice and wide too.

Well yes... that... except I'm not Jeremy Clarkson and I doubt I could get a supersonic jet to race me!

Seriously though: do you know of one?

Eish dude...We used to go on the N6 on your way to Atlantis??? That is kinda quiet past 12 at night and very very long!

I know its not disused...but I doubt you'll find a disused road in CT, otherwise that GPS system City of Cape Town uses is crap - "all roads should be used" is what the techie told me 4 years ago!

my best bet is N6 late at night...or waai to Worscester...late at night, that road I've found to be quite empty at night...

Ooooh now i somme miss CT

Yea, the West Coast road is an obvious 'if only' but I have personally seen the results of a partial head on that road.
Ta, but pass thanks.

Oh, if my dad's 156 2.5 V6 can pull a GTi G5 at 200-230kph, than your car can...no need to prove it, G5's are swak at high speeds!

*hides in corner as G5 drivers whip out amo*

oooh! now you've gone and done it... JK8 in: 3.2.1. aand..

Dude, I know I can beat him - I suspect it may even be an epic beating - along the lines of a Mortal Kombat "FINISH HIM!"

What I really want is to prove it the bask in the glory!

The real beauty is that even in the cold, hard light of day he still insists that he'll smoke me!

When you do find the stretch of road and you are ready for the real thing just keep the booze to a minimum please!

Yea, no - totally.

We both really love cars and driving so we have already decided it won't be an old school 'dice' i.e.: both cars on the road simultaneously racing against one another - rather it will be a 'time-trial' where we do one car then the other, co-piloting each other.

That way we both get two thrilling rides instead of one each... but safety first so definitely zero booze:)

Hmm, still makes me think of two guys comparing penis sizes. At the end of the day what does it really prove if your car is faster over 1km? Then whoever loses will want to try 2km or 500m, or check top speeds. Maybe I just don't get it...

I like your comments about wanting to ensure it is 100% safe for everyone but as a regular watcher of "seconds from disaster", and the like, there is no such thing. you could both end up killing each other, again, for what?

Please don't do this on public roads at night. Drive out to the sticks and find a long stretch during the day. Go all the way to the end of it, then race back. Maybe have a 3rd and 4th car "guard" each end of the road so you can look out for other cars and cops?
