It gets better: http://www.wpmc.co.za/streetracing.php

A6 V6 Quattro vs Gti over 1 km ... I'd say the A6 walks it.

Open day would be a good bet yeah, not too sure when the next one is.
As for cornering, just clock your times on the back straight which is 1km long iirc.

Unused roads, not that I can think of any off the top of my head.
But if you are going to find any, you'd better hope the road surface is ok for the task.

Get back to you all on this one.

There's gotta be some industrial area that has a closed off road! :p :D

Ask the guys down at Killarney's Advanced Training centre if they could hook up something on the back straight...

Yea - the must be somewhere! Right?

Doesn't count.
Besides no one said it wasn't dumb ;)

Just some comments about the cars seeing as the poll is up (nice one mods!)

Golf Mk5 - stock apart from 18" wheels.
Audi A6 - stock apart from 18" wheels.

Dolby: your comments around the A3 are true but beside the point.

The discussion started around the 'hot hatch' fad - my mate reckons he'll never be seen dead in a 'stasie-wa' and reckons his hatch is the funkiest thing ever... what a knob - I maintain all that a hatch is, is a snub nosed estate.
It's the biggest lark the motor industry ever pulled... "Look you're not old, you may have a baby seat in the back but you're still young and hip... just look how short your station wagon is!"

So what I am trying to prove is that despite the A6 not being a 'funky hot hatch' it still out performs said POS.

He maintains that I drive an 'old ballies' car... like I said: knob.

I have thought it through and I still cannot fathom the POV that makes people think we are being inconsiderate in wanting to do this.
Silly: yes.
Immature: utterly.
Irresponsible and immoral?? How the f... do you get to that??
I totally agree that someone getting his jollies on a motorcycle or in a motor car and putting everyone one the road at risk for his adrenalin rush is totally immoral- outright wrong.
Removing yourself from the streets in order to do that... well surely that's what you'd want a guy like that to do??

What we propose poses zero danger to anyone else and minimal danger to the two of us... frankly I am more concerned about the cars. :erm:

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding then ;)

What is the exact model of your A6 - and what gearbox do both cars have (standard /DSG )?

This A3 3.2 quattro V6 has 184kw / 320nm and runs to a top end of 247km/h ... which means it's still pulling significantly at 200km/h.

The GTI is only 147kw / 280nm and runs to a top end of 225km /h ... which means it's actually starting to 'slow' at that speed

The A3 3.2 quattro is actually ahead the entire time ... from 0-225km/h ... and yet the difference at 1km still isn't massive.

Your car isn't nearly as quick as the A3 (bigger body, less power, lower acceleration, lower top end etc). What is your reasoning for slaugheting the GTI - when the A3 couldn't even 'slaughter' it?

Bunch of numbers - this is like that part of Top Gear that I just glaze over during

What I do know:
A6 - tiptronic; 161kw
GTI - not sure of transmission TBH and the rest you have stated already.

Neither of us have enough knowledge to work it out on paper - thus the contest. Again: no one said this wasn't dumb.

Is it fair to boil down your calculations by saying then that 1km is not a long enough stretch for the A6 to pull ahead?

I have seen the GTI take off from a robot like a giant Naas Botha just administered the 'skep-skop' but I have also seen the A6 pull away like something just whipped it outta there and then continue to gather speed until the driver got off the pedal.
The GTI doesn't do that - it peaks then essentially stops accelerating.

So that (lo-tech as it is) is essentially my reasoning. At the heart of it though is a comparison of performance between two cars of a different class.

And yes, I do have strong feelings on guys racing on public roads in case you hadn't noticed. People die!

No s**t, Sherlock! I didn’t know that. You mean it’s like an accident on public roads? Like life? (Its been identified as the major cause of death.)

You really are a nasty, mean-spirited creature with a huge PC nanny complex.

Ok, ok... although I do agree with you - let's try to keep the discussion around the topic of cars. So basically: Please don't feed the troll, it keeps them coming back.

I'd agree with that ;)

I'd be interested in the outcome too, hould you do it.

Out of interest, how will you measure the two cars ie when they get get to 200km/h, times etc?

Ok, now I understand :)

Not sure about the question around measuring - the winner will be the car that covers 1km in the least time.
There will be no further analysis (until we're back home after a few beers and the loser starts belly-aching over it.)
