Need a 1997 Hyundai Elantra Remote

I need a 1997 Elantra remote.

I called Hyundai themselves, they gave me a quote of R702. Obviously that ain't happening.

So my alternative is to get a remote from someone, preferrably in my area(Centurion) who has an old one lying around not being used, for a price of course, and I can just replace the programmable part with the one I currently have.

My one is worn out, the rubbering in the middle is gone and the buttons don't work unless you press so hard that you basically break your fingers.

So, if anyone knows where I can get one, which is second hand and in working condition, I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

So you need a blank fob and it must be programmed?

I dont think it will be far off from R700.

What's a fob? And clearly it's not far off R700, as it is R702. That cost is not justified, so I'm looking for alternatives.

I just need a casing with the buttons and the rubber that goes in between. The actual programmed module is working.

just a hunch here, but maybe a universal programming remote might work for you? I think your car is maybe old enough?
you can get those at yale/ security shops; bring the old one and see if they got one that might work for you;

otherwise; sorry to tell you, you got to spend the money; or try one of those places that manufactures spare keys/ reprograms car remotes

and R700 is what you got to pay,

Normally the key is fused with the PCB, so you cant just swap the parts around.

And by the way, R700 is cheap compared to other cars.

With this one you definitely can. The parts I want to replace, is just plastic and rubber. No way that would have an effect.

probably those car reprogramming places might be able to help you; they got the "shell" of the key with the buttons;

maybe you wont need the whole key then.

Do you perhaps know what to search for? Guessing "car reprogramming place" won't bring up much. :p

Perhaps I wasn't clear, but the remote is separate, and not part of the key. So I just need the casing for the remote.

Thanks a lot for your helpfulness.

So Yale in Centurion Mall might be a good place to try as well I guess...

yes try them; maybe you might get lucky and one of the dismantled remote buttons will work fine for you;

they should have a remote tester there; showing you the frequency your works on; thats how they can test if a universal might just work.

give it a shot;

Hehe. Had a guy there, who straight tells me "we don't give car remotes".

Told him to program it according to what it is now. He then says he can't program it with the receiver.

So I ask him to tell me why I was able to get my complex security remotes there 2 years ago, since I didn't need to bring the whole gate receiver from the complex. He says "some remotes don't need it".

I don't think this guy is very eager to do his job, though. My colleague came with, wanted to cut keys for his new place, the guy said he can only cut 2 of them, not all 4. He probably can't even spell "remote tester".

Tried 2 other places as well - Independent Car & Radio or something, as well as Kitwe Security in the mall. No luck.

The search continues.

R700 bucks and you're going to all this trouble? You'll end up paying more than that in petrol and wasted time. Just buy the thing.

I'm guessing we don't get nearly similar salaries. R700 is a lot of money to me. Will you tell my wife that she won't have food at the end of the month, or should I?

And towing the car there. What do you think that'll cost? It'll cost me way less if I can just get the cover for the remote. Hence my post.

Anyone else with some constructive advice will be appreciated.

It's a lot of money to anyone (although still a fraction of what other dealers charge) , but what I said was you'll end up spending more than that anyway.

So you'll end up with more frustrations and less money than if you'd just bit the bullet and bought it.

Unless of course your time isn't worth anything and you can afford mucking about looking for something you might not get.

Car makers and the SA law are a lot stricter these days with selling and reprogramming keys etc for obvious reasons.

My wife just spent just over R1500 to replace her RunX key and that excludes labour costs.
Unfortunately the transponder also needed replacing (switch contacts on PCB gone - couldn't lock or unlock vehicle anymore) otherwise it would have been possible to purchase a blank key (no transponder/remote inside) for around R200 on OLX/Gumtree/BidOrBuy and get the key cut at a locksmith.

Ebay is a pretty good place to find after market parts without having to pay the stealerships.
Not sure what your's looks like: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?Brand=Republic&_nkw=hyundai+elantra+key+fob&_sop=16

Please don't tell me what my time is worth.

There must be a better way, there always is. Clearly you won't help me find it, so I'd appreciate it if you stopped posting here.

No one told you anything, princess.

If your response to people who try to give you advice is to be an ******, I can understand why they wouldn't be keen to help you.

If you already don't have a spare key, imagine how bad it would be if your current one stops working. Hope you find something before there's real trouble and it stops working though.

I think the original remotes were made by a company called ShureLock, and they have since gone belly up. My 99 Tiburon had the same issue and I sold it before being able to find another casing for the worn out remote. Good luck finding a casing, but I am pretty sure you are going to have to fork out the R702 in the end.
