here's the thing, i happen to have a pen from a samsung 8" (pt-5100 or some such). could i get a tab that would take this pen?

i'm will to try out a chinese tab from aliexpress or similar site

I also have the Note 8.0 TAB ( GT - N5100 ) with Spen .
I have tried above with other phones /devices .
(eg Note series 2/3/4 ,5 etc )
S Pen does not work on any of then !!.
as far as i know ,it only works with the relevant Note 8.0 WACOM digitizer ,
so even having a similar device it should not work .
Best option
is to take pen go to a cellphone shop and test it ?

No real good variety in good tablets, in South Africa today. I'm also in the market for one. Problem I see, is if the camera is good, then the CPU is kark. or; If one thing is good, it lacks in one or two other departments.

Why would you care about a camera on a tablet?

Its for my daugher. She prefers a tablet. Her current 7" Lenovo is cracked and out of date.

What is your budget? Judging from your post it isn't a lot, so you're probably not going to get a decent camera. That's actually a blessing in disguise. It baffles me that people take pics with their tablets haha. Get a Android tablet with at least these specs:
32 GB storage (some brands don't allow you to install apps on your micro SD card + the whole 16GB isn't usable)
Micro SD slot
2 GB Ram
A mid range soc (Snapdragon 400 series or something similar would be good enough)
720p display is fine but I would get a 1080p display
Read reviews on tablets that meet the specs to see how their cameras perform. Don't just look at megapixel count!

The tablet market isn't dying, it has just plateaued. Don't forget that tablets haven't been mainstream for that long. People generally keep tablets for more years than a phone, so sales will always be less than phone sales.

Agreed although iPads will persevere due to its rep and use in schools and businesses.

As soon a the MiMax is released I'm ditching my tablet. Will make a nice and compact reading device.

Galaxy Tab s and s2, 8 inch and 9.7 inchs , Droid tabs come with 32gb onboard and can get Android 6, also expandable storage and awesome screens, they are pricey though.

This. Got one last week and it does everything you need it to well enough. Very happy with it considering it cost under 2 grand. The only extra purchased was a 64gb microSD card. You will run out of the 8gb onboard memory very quickly.

I picked one up for 1.5k last year. Extremely happy with it. Only real downside is the 8gig on board. But all things considered. Excellent value.
