Application available here: ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/setiathome-3.08.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe

This application currently works via dial up but not via adsl (was working on adsl until about 3 weeks ago). If confirmed seems like telkom has disabled a perfectly legitimate use of their adsl service.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

ASnogarD - I can confirm that the cap has not been reached here. This is a WIn2K box that shares the adsl line via an ALcatel speed touch home adsl modem/router (running in bridged mode) using the RASPPPOE protocol stack. This application has been running in this configuration with adsl since Jan 2003 and only ceased to work about 3 weeks ago (only when uploading via adsl). If I disconnect the adsl line and connect via dial-up (shared in the same way as the adsl line) everything works as expected.
I am just looking for someone to confirm that this is a general problem with the telkom ADSL network (port prioritization?) and not something elsewhere.

maybe this is the cause (taken from the saix fault notice board):

Have you tried using the dsl-cache.saix.net:8080 proxy?

I also had a few strange problems with uploads to certain web apps and using this proxy solved the problem.

Thanks DFantom, don't think that is the cause however SAT 3 down for &gt; 3weeks?

Where I am going with this is to confirm that telkom has broken an application with changes to the adsl network and if that is the case hopefully add further ammunition to the ICASA adsl complaint. I see distributed computing applications (particularly low bandwidth ones such as this one) to be perfectly legitimate use of the adsl network.

I have tried logging a fault with telkoms ISP and needless to say have been given the run around from ISP -&gt; ADSL -&gt; SAIX support with various bs excuses. Telkom ISP tech had this to say "Telkoms ADSL network was designed for browsing and email only", I have never heard such bulls**t in my life. Had this information been made available to me when I originally signed up for ADSL (Dec 2002) I would have not signed up. I originally signed up as my ISDN dial charges were starting to exceed the R1000/month threshold at which it made sense to cap expenses by going adsl. Now telkom is telling me that I may only use my adsl line for browsing and email and want's to extort more money from me by forcing me back to dial up for everything else. Even browsing and email on adsl has been broken on certain sites in the past due to poor security on telkoms mail servers and subsequent blacklisting on anti-spam databases.

As said previously, before going off on the wrong track, I need to confirm that this fault lies with the adsl network and not the berkeley or my local networks. All my testing has all but excluded the latter two as being at fault.

Hmm.. thanks knewman - did try that proxy this weekend, but with port 80 only. Will try as suggested and give feedback.
