I managed to figure this one out ... and sure it will help someone looking to do the same ... So if anyone prefers NOT to use the connection manager that came with their 3G modem and prefers to have windows use the 3G modem to connect to the internet seamlessly, automatically and silently as if you have an Ethernet cable plugged in, then this is for you .... this was done in windows 8 professional with the ZTE MF668 modem ... (sure similar principles can be applied to other OS and modem types)
STEP 1: plug usb modem in and let it install the connection manager and the modem drivers
Have to do this step, because i found without the connection manager installed the drivers do not initialise
STEP 2: Once installed, disable the "autorun" or "run on startup" option in the connection manager
you might be tempted to hit the connect button ... PLEASE DO NOT
STEP 3: Close the connection manager (so the connection manager is installed but it is now setup not to automatically start when windows starts)
STEP 4: Download MDMA from this
link
thanks to MYadsl's ginggs on posts etc that helped me
STEP 5: create two shortcuts of the MDMA.exe file you just downloaded (place them anywhere really, the desktop is a nice place if you really cant think of a place to create the shortcuts)
STEP 6: What we want to do is disable the modems virtual CD rom thingy that runs on startup and just have the modem initialised. What i found is that the modem drivers are not initialised if the virtual CD rom thingy is running ... so to do this we need to use the MDMA program with some command lines ... right click on the first shortcut you created and go to properties ... now change the line which says "target" to the following:
C:\Users\
Adam\Downloads\mdma1100\mdma.exe /zstorage:8
Change Adam to your username and C: to the drive MDMA has been installed/copied on
Let MDMA program run and once it says ready in the status bar close it
no change the second shortcut you created in much the same way you did the first ... and add this next to the target
C:\Users\Adam\Downloads\mdma1100\mdma.exe /zstorage:E
Again Change Adam to your username and C: to the drive MDMA has been installed/copied on
Let MDMA program run and once it says ready in the status bar close it
STEP 7: Optional I guess but never hurts to do this ... restart the PC
STEP 8: Once your PC has been restarted, hopefully the modem will appear in the device manager and you wont have the virtual CD autorun option coming up for the connection manager, nor will you have the connection manager itself starting up ... what we want to do now is create a dial up connection ... to do this is pretty easy, under the control panel > network and internet > new internet connection ... then choose a new connection and name it to what ever you want ... or leave the default which i think is "dial-up connection" .. under the property setting of your newly created dial up connection just enter in "*99#" without the quotes under the phone number setting ... and thats it ... dont worry about the other settings ... save and close ...
STEP 9: ok so the connection has been created ... and like in windows 8, when i go settings > internet access, i have the option to connect my dial up connection by just hitting "connect" ... why not, test it and makes sure it works ... and hopefully you will near instantly be connected to the internet ... if everything went well ... BUT ... like me, you thinking "i want this bloody thing to just automatically connect to the internet and dont want to hit the connect button everytime, because I am lazy and i know it" ... so lets automate this
STEP 10: Create a text file on your desktop and copy the following text inside the file
@ECHO OFF
RASDIAL "
Dial-up Connection"
Where Dial-up Connection must be replaced to what you called your dial up connection ... if there are no spaces in your dial up connections name ... then there is no need for quotes ...
Close and save and change your extension on the file to BAT (might need to change settings in windows to show extensions for known file types)
once done, cut this file and paste it into the following location
C:\Users\
Adam\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Again change the drive letter to your windows install location and the username adam to what your location is
Close everything, restart and hopefully if all is ok, you should have internet with automatic on ...
