Need help securing a WiFi connection

I am reasonably computer literate and have managed to set up an ad-hoc WiFi connection from a desktop (WiFi USB stick) to a laptop (built-in WiFi). The desktop has a Billion router and provides internet access to the network.

When UNSECURED, the connection works well and I can surf the net from the the laptop computer etc.

Whn I try SECURING the WiFi connection, I cannot access the desktop from the laptop, even though I can detect the network.

The hardware I have only allows WEP security, and I have also checked that the security key numbers correspond.

Is there anything else that I can check?

Try with the web key and make shure that on the laptop the gateway is the ip of your usb stick

I have to use server assigned IP addresses as that is the only way I can see the network and share the internet.

But I will try your suggestion and let you know.

Special Characters...

I had some issues with special characters in the keys, esp ' and ", the devices kept thinking it was the end of the key string.

Doubt this is your issue, but perhaps try with a really short key to test.

It gets stranger

The laptop that connect to the PC is a Siemens.
I also have a Compaq laptop, that I just formatted, and using the same settings, I can connect to the secured WLAN.
The Siemens laptop still cannot connect. I am due to reformat it shortly and will report back.

Sony X 10 Mini How do i conect to the internet with my sony x10 mini I manage to get the phone to detect and connect wirelessly to the my Telkom ADSL Omega 105wr but from there on I cannot connect to the internet I have more than one ISP im guessing this could be the prob I have Afrihost as my default internet and Telkom as the provider so Phone connects to the the Router but from there i cannot get any further can someone help with this is it possible ?
