Did a search on the forum and couldnt find any topics related to just getting an adsl router connection on a linux box. Found how to make it a gateway, but, for now I just want it to connect!

I have made the connection under network controls but it doesnt seem to resolve. Do I need to set the route? If so what should these settings be?

Im an ultra nubie running red hat 9 I believe with a standard telkom router (from a year ago).

Thanks for any help and sorry again if its been discussed to death already somewhere!

You'll have to provide more info as to what you did and what your router settings are, if these topics don't help. Personally I wouldn't use Red Hat - I stopped using it from v7, due to its idiosyncracies. As you're a newbie, I would suggest you opt for Mandrake 9.2, which will hold your hand (and give it a squeeze if necessary, via 'wizards' [:)] ).

well Ive set up the connection as a ppoe and left the static route entries empty. My router is set with out-the-box settings with dhcp. All my windows boxes on the network make their connections themselves (username and password). It states the connection is active but I cant even ping. I do not want to make the linux box a gateway, just get it to surf the web atm.

Will check out mandrake!

With RH9, all you have to do is connect your NIC to the router and configure it to obtain it's ip address and DNS via DHCP. You don't even need to install a PPoE client or anything. When your RH box boots, it will find the router and should connect without any problems. On bootup, watch the list and see what is says about starting eth0 (assuming your are using one NIC). If this reports OK, you should be up and running.

PS. mbs- RH9 works just fine...

erm, but surely the router needs to actually be connected then and have an account to connect to in its settings? as far as I understood it the standard telkom boxes require client side authorisation unless u set them up with advanced procedures.

The saga continues.

yea you should use PPPoE on the Linux box sothat it actualy is able to controll traffic.

Hi there!

Keep in mind that with PROLOG ADSL you only have 2 concurrent logins. Which means you can have 2 pc's login using the same username and password with each of them getting their own IP.

With PROLOG PLUS ADSL you can get 4 pc's online with their own IP's.

If you have 2 windows machines and one Linux box (3 pc's in total) you will not be able to log them all in with one account on PROLOG, unless you have PROLOG PLUS...

Thus, the Linux box may be configured correctly, but while the windows machines are taking up your concurrent session allowance you will not get it connected...

Might this be the problem?

Note that you don't have to spend more money on getting more accounts... There are other methods discussed on this forum for solving it. But then you don't have to tamper with Redhat's DSL config... Then it becomes a LAN based magic business... [;)] This is where the fun starts...

I run Redhat by the way and it works fine... I run a web server, mail server, FTP server, game service and much more on it with no problems.

Hi PK

If you want, drop me a mail at rylan@<deletethis>intekom.co.za - I had exactly the same problem as you and solved it for Rh9. I can now surf with Rh9 over Telkom ADSL.

I'll be happy to help you configure your Linux to work with TADSL.
