Hifi corp have the Toshiba H20 on special for R999.

Read reviews in the camera and most people give it a great review apart from a fiew niggles like being slow etc.

Seen the test video on websites also not bad, I want to stay away from SD cameras as I only have LCD HD TV's etc.

So HD is a must?

Budget is max of R2500 - but then again I also dont want to skimp on your first child growing up and need something that lasts?

Any ideas?

I got the SD Sony (going for R2500 nowdays) a few weeks ago for my daughters birth and really happy. I was put of HDD as the its a point of failure. HDD cameras can shutdown if shaked a bit too much.

I did not get a chance to test the Toshiba but what I liked about the Sony was it was dead easy to use, has a touch screen and most important you can swivel the screen. Makes a massive difference (thought it was overrated but trust me, your glad you can do it).

Now its only a HD and not Full HF camera, but its not been a problem as I have to upload the files to Youtube for the family to watch.

The Sony works also very well under poor light - something that my digital camera sucked at.

The kid only arrives in January next year - so not too sure if I should take the leap now or wait for December specials, maybe newer models.
then again, only 3 months to go.
I dont want something that will look *** on my lcd TV.

One really important thing: Go spend 30 minutes testing your Video camera before purchase at the store. I was fortunate that my local Dion Wired had fully functional display models.

My budget was up to R7K (thanks again to my Dad) and tested all of the units. Ironic that I went for the second cheapest on display - its not always about price.

I don't have an LCD screen (yet), so playback on my PC. It seems that the current specials on all models is to make way for the new, more expensive ones to come. In all honesty you will always have buyers remorse as you will always see something better & cheaper the next day.

Actually happened to me. Bought the camera for R2900 at Dion Wired and the next week it was R2500 at Game.

Do I regret it, never. That week alone gave us great pleasure in capturing memories and was worth R400.

What about involving a friend who has a camera, get him to teach you and show you and you can loan the camera... save money!!! You're gonna need it!

Most of my friends don't yet have kids.......

R999 is not breaking the bank - will go check it out this weekend, hopefully they don't only stock like two cameras and are sold out.

You actually want to film, in HD, your wife's guava being stretched beyond whay you think is "big"???? Dude spend the money getting the doctor to add a few well placed stitches. Mutch better use of your cash in the long run.

Just kidding. I swear by the Sony cameras. Easy to use and great picture quality.

It's a toss up between:

Toshiba H20 R999 ( no addon card) Hi-Fi corp

Sony Bloggie R1999 incudes 4GB SD card

Basically identical
5x optical
Actually Sony appears to record higher resolution.

watched youtube reviews - both are pretty decent?

Your cash and descion but the Sony SX44 is better speced for the extra R500 cash. Its got a 60x Optical - something you really, really need with those little ones.
