Neotel for sale - Vodacom and MTN looking to buy, say sources

Does Neotel still hold that, once much worshiped, SNO license?

Their license is mostly irrelevant after the new licensing regime. All operators have iECNS licenses, which mean they can build whatever network they want (I hope I am correct here Dominic).

What they do have are lots of spectrum, and a big fibre network. That is of great value to Vodacom and MTN, and worth paying lots of money for.

Not sure if this is good news for us as far as price goes, Neotel Broadband Fibre is well priced and Vodacom / MTN aren't really known for low prices :-/

This could turn out to be a good or a bad thing, depending on who ends up buying them if they are for sale.

Either of the MNO's and we could have problems since they're both known to price gouge.

This is bad news. There goes the competition...
Not that there was any but still.....

Exactly my first thoughts, especially an acquisition by VC, would be very bad for competition. And create a market dominance. Hope Competition Commission can have a decent look at this, when rumours prove to be real.

It would be interesting to look at the share prices of the companies mentioned as the rumours if significant to them are market movers.

Personally I would like to see Neotel and Cell C merge

Isn't there some way we can get ICASA to not allow Vodacon and eMpTyN to buy them out. I feel we'll be going a few steps backwards if they do buy them.

Cell c has no capital.
Don't think they want to play in the fixed line space.
MTN not worried about SA.
Vodacom might just want the licences.
Mmmmm.
Hopefully a foreign investor snaps it up.
