But this did not mean other prospective operators might not still lay their own cables. Or that investors could not invest in more than one project if they wanted to.

I've already started laying mine.. brown and miles long..

South African communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri said the experience of South Africa (with Telkom and SAT-3) and Mauritius demonstrated that an entirely private sector-led undersea cable project was like a private club deciding on its own pricing levels, to the detriment of the countries requiring affordable broadband connectivity. She said Nepad was not averse to companies making a profit, this should not be a in a way “that makes costs exorbitant”.

Is she serious???? She must be the single most deluded person in government. At least Manto can blame her stupidity on alcohol, but as far as I know Ivy does not have that excuse. She's just naturally stupid. She's actually incredibly gifted at being stupid. She's raised it to an art!!

Thank you, Ivy, for being personally responsible for creating the situation you so disingeniously deplore. Competition, you COW. C-O-M-P-E-T-I-T-I-O-N. Get a fricking dictionary or a cronie with an MBA and find out what it means!!!!!!!!!!!

Chasia said Nepad believed a cable of this size should be a collaboration between all the operators planning to lay cables along Africa’s coastline: “We hope there will be participation from their part. This will be a very big cable going to many places, with a lot of capacity. The discussions we’ve had so far have been very encouraging.”

Yeah!! Let's have another monopoly!! :(

Well, she obviously forgot that Telkom was a monopoly, so it doesnt matter if its private or public sector ownership, its still a monopoly. I think she never played the board game, thats why she's so clueless...

That’s where you've made your first major mistake........you referred to Ivy as a PERSON when she actually falls under the same classification as single-celled animals e.g. Amoeba, e-coli (bacteria found in sewage).... :D

Is this not just another SAT-3 consortium in the making?
Surely competing cables is what is called for to drive down prices and ensure competitive pricing so that South Africa, and Africa can compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world?
These communists cannot spell competition let alone create an environment where it can thrive.

Sadly, I don't think the competing cables will be allowed to land anywhere near here... Those soon-to-be-published policy guidelines are looking more and more sinister by the day...

at the current rate I think the 2009 date is a bit optimistic. Maybe they'll be ready by 2109...

So many story's so many attempts so many excuses, Excuse me if I say I will only believe it when I see it in reality. Pipe dreams is an South African disease and should not be taken seriously until you see the pipe and hope that you will not foot the bill after the pockets is lined! (Referring to the expected road improvement expenses now to be paid by the motorist, yet we collected more than 60BN extra in taxes!

Ivy's in the pay! Stupid useless piece of ****

Am I the only one who finds this kind of post offensive?

However incompetant or corrupt we perceive the minister to be, personal insults are counter-productive.

Do you think anyone in government, or in any sphere of influence, will take this website, and the views expressed here seriously, while the forums are filled with this mindless vitriol?

Tackle the issues. Argue the points. Pull the ministers words and deeds to shreds if you have to, but leave childish personal insults on the school playground. They serve absolutely no purpose, other than to reflect poorly on the credibility of the person uttering them.

The kind of language used, and expressions posted by some people in this forum is really sad and beyond the pale.
It is difficult to know how often objections like yours should be posted. Anyway, glad you did.

" Telkom was a key stakeholder in the existing Sat-3 undersea cable, and the cost of bandwidth was artificially high because it was a “private club”, she said. “We couldn’t bring the price down because that club decided the costs.”"

AND WHO OWNS TELKOM - MINISTER INCOMPETENT ?
WHO GET'S THIS CASH RAPED FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSUMER IF NOT THE GOVERNMENT WHO IS SO "CONCERNED" ABOUT AFFORDABLE BROADBAND !

What a completely useless oxygen thief. She will go far in the ANC.
If she did her job she would be fired after all...............
