Africa could soon have a new, US$2bn submarine telecommunications cable encircling the continent and connecting SA and other African countries with Europe, India and the Americas. The proposed system, the first stage of which should go live in 2009, will have a design capacity of 3 800Gbit/s.

So if the contract has been made, who is laying the cable and who are the 70% private sector owners? Ivy? Lyndall? Anyone?

Could this be the 'we have something much more nefarious planned' that Stalin-Mafole was hinting about a few weeks ago?

Just waiting now for Poison Ivy to figure out that 30% < 51% before she coughs up another doughnut - although based on that photo it does look like she is admiring a silent but violent she might have let loose...

Anyone else have any doubts that this NEPAD cable system will be operational sometime in 2009?

12 African governments cannot come up with 160mill US$ each to get this project going and join the world? That is about 1 billion Rand, i.e. 2% of the cost of the arms deal.

Stop talking, start laying some fibre, get something done. All talk and no work makes Jack a poor boy.

Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri told FMTech that she is hopeful that InfraCo and SEACOM will be incorporated into the new Nepad cable project.
So by inference...
She is no longer blocking SEACOM???

I doubt the 2009 bit

Realisticly, it is unlikely that any cable system that is started now will be commissioned before 2012, or with a superhuman effort 2011. Even the Infraco cable that is being talked about by the SA government is unlikely to be commissioned before 2011, or more likely 2012.
