Electricity price hikes for 2022 announced

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved an average electricity tariff increase of 9.61% for the 2022/2023 financial year.

During a briefing on Thursday, 24 February 2022, Nersa chairperson Nhlanhla Gumede said that the regulator had approved Eskom's allowable revenue for the year at R249.726 billion.

Even with a 20.5% tariff hike, Eskom CFO Calib Cassim said Eskom would still require government support of R21 billion over the next two financial years to help service its debt.

While the increase Nersa is allowing is far below what Eskom had asked for, it is still above South Africa’s average inflation rate of 4.5% in 2021 and 5.7% in January.
As long as Eskom remains an SOE, this is no win for consumers.
Either you are going to pay for Eskoms inefficiency by tariffs, or by increased taxes for bail outs.

Only if these clowns were to reign in all defaulters as well as charge everyone fairly, then we wouldnt have 10% yearly increments. Now we wait to see what the Ethekweni charges its clients.

...those emigration plans look good now.

Sorting out Eskom by raising the prices and further burdening the retreating tax base isn't the way to do things. That's the logical thought process though which never applies in this country.

Eskom 9.61%, DA run CoCT will come in at 19.61% increases ... because they always deliver more than the government.

Guess me ebucks will need to subsidise my electricity bill now.

In a way, yes.
But take a look at their increase history over the past 10 years, do you see a pattern there? They are awarding huge increases (way more than CPI) every single year, and these compound over time.

Lat year the CoCT increase was less than the Eskom increase.
That what you think. They took just hid the increase in other line items. My rates went up significantly and my line feed charge.

Being an election year they gave us some courtesy lube. This year they will go in dry and hard!
