Nersa concurs with decision to procure new electricity generation infrastructure for South Africa

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has concurred with the ministerial determination for the procurement of 11,813MW of generation infrastructure under the Integrated Resources Plan of 2019 (IRP2019), Eskom announced in a statement.

“Eskom is pleased to note that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has concurred with the ministerial determination for the procurement of 11,813MW of electricity generation infrastructure as issued by the Minister of Mineral Resource and Energy in February 2020,” Eskom said.

“This is part of the power infrastructure to be procured under the Integrated Resources Plan of 2019 (IRP2019) over the years to 2030.”

So like the last 9Gw that's been broken on and off for 5 years?

Why did they turn down the power ships? Greed...

Eskom doesn't want to be shown up by a stationary ship (with less people) generating more power than Eskom can provide with thousand of "workers"...
Cause those power ships weren't going to be that easy, they need to meet environmental standards, which they didn't, they need to be able to hook up to the grid, they would need to by synced to the grid. It's not like an inverter you can just plug in. Also we'd need about 10 of them to make a difference,

Pretty much this..

As much as the articles, and their CEO Paddy would like to make out, the power ships are not this magical save all... they're not a quick fix to our problems and may actually be more trouble than they're worth.

The patronage network is going to say zuma was right about the russian nuclear option, affordability being a minor technical detail.

This is the largest ship in the fleet, so well need 8 of them, our grid runs on 50 Hz. We feed very high voltages via the grid around the country and the ships run on 42 Hz

Well that's why there are step up and down transformers along the lines. But yeah it'll not be easy to sync to the grid.
