Nersa wants to charge solar panel users up to 1,000% more for power than big mines

That sort of idea will just kill the grid tied solution... It will make it feasible to just go straight offgrid.

Yup if they decide to go that route; I’ll upgrade my system to be off grid and be done with Eskom. Even if that means I install a backup gennie for bad weeks of weather.

Experts have warned that punishing solar power users would drive away more paying Eskom customers by encouraging them to go entirely off-grid. That could deliver another big knock to Eskom’s revenue.
Pretty much…

The title of this article is misleading. It makes it sound as if solar power users are being specifically targeted. If you read the article what they actually mean is that solar power users will be charged the same fixed fee as every other electricity user regardless of whether they use any grid electricity or not. This is currently the situation in most municipalities anyway. Specifically in the City of Cape Town, and I suspect in most municipalities, it's not even possible to cancel your electricity account even if you have an entirely off-grid solution.
Nersa's approach is different from Eskom's.

Eskom wants the capacity charge for all customers, that has been their stance for some time. Nersa wants prices to be specific to each group.

With Nersa's proposal, the tariff for grid-tied self-generating households could potentially go up by 5 to 10 times.

That's like saying people who use e-mail for communication should pay 10X more to send post through the post office or people who watch youtube should pay 10X more for TV license.
Oi! Stop giving them ideas.

South Africans with solar panels could pay 1,000% more for electricity than big power users

South African households that use both their own solar power and Eskom's grid could soon be paying up to 10 times — or 1,000% — more for electricity than the country's biggest power users.

Sunday newspaper Rapport reports this is one of the implications of a new electricity pricing methodology planned by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).
Lol. Now they pretending to own the Sun. Imagine BMW charging Mercedez drivers because Mercedez drivers does not want to drive BMW. That's exactly what they are trying. Not gonna fly. A joke.

We had a power outage for 12 hours last week. Ran the generator until it came back online.

The only inconvenience we face with extended outages is the internet going down but nothing we can really do about that.

That's not demographically representative. Where is the outcry?
And in the bottom right corner we have the one white person who is so white they are completely invisible, even their name was contrasted to oblivion.

But Eskom claims that users with solar power systems force the utility to ramp up generation at a faster rate in preparation for peak demand in the evening because they could not rely on sunlight for their full energy needs during that time.

This just shows how out of touch the idiots are with reality. Most as in probably >95% of people who put in solar systems put in some form of battery. This means that in peak period we are drawing off battery and not off grid.

I think that is they continue wanting to screw us we setup a group and actually set our systems so that we use power off grid at peak.

I only use power in the early morning between 12 and 3 .... But that can be changed :)

I can predict the following now:

1) Either go totally off the grid
2) Or pay scheduled fees (to help feed the rest who stays behind) ... as in the title

3) put in a generator which is cheap to cover non sun hours.

The problem with Solar is that those that can afford it (middle class and above) go Solar because it's cheaper and addresses load shedding - both hight costs and load shedding are Eskom's fault.

On top of that, those same people are the ones that pay for electricity.

That leaves Eskom with less paying customers (I'm thinking Soweto, Alex, etc) so Eskom has to increase taxes to keep going. This results in more defection.

A classic death spiral.

Fix the high costs and load shedding and people will stop defecting.
