Netflix has just launched in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Austria, and they say they will spend $3 billion to produce unique European content.

When do you think Netflix will arrive in South Africa?

Telkom seems to claim they are "in negotiation" with Netflix a couple of times

Netflix already said many months ago that the SA market is too small to bother with.

The problem is they have absolutely no rights to anything in this country. Multichoice own the broadcasting and distribution rights of almost all current series in SA, including Netflix's own original series. Netflix shows like Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Arrested Development and The Killing are all shown on Dstv, and I believe it will also be available on their on demand service. I am of the opinion if Multichoice can launch a proper comparable on demand service, which we already know they are doing, then we can just use them as our "Netflix". This new on demand service will have thousands of movies and older seasons of hundreds of series, just like Netflix. Netflix is just a brand. What we really want is the product.

I agree on most parts. Sadly, the issue I'm most bothered by is the fact that for ~800 a month I can get either DSTV, or I can get uncapped with a home Wi-Fi network, Unotelly, Netflix, Hulu+, and Amazon instant video. The DSTV pricing / value ratio is the large issue for me, as I feel that option 2 gives me so much more value for my moolah. This is further compounded by the intrinsic differences between a channel based provider and a content based provider (ie, preset channels vs picking your content specifically)

So basically we need more people to circumvent the location restrictions for Netflix to officially come to South Africa?

I want to show you something:

Who here trusts Multichoice to price their video streaming competitively?

Not if those Australians get their way. If they get Netflix to stop VPN/DNS bypassing it won't be long before those multitwats ask for the same thing in RSA :(
There will always be a way around this. Also why throw away all that extra income?

So they might make it a little harder, but they will leave us a tiny gap. Just like the recent Netflix update forcing Google dns lookup.

A quick Google gives you loads of workarounds...

After a few months of adding content Vidi will most likely be good enough.

Luckily, the internet opens up a world of possibilities for anyone with access to it. There are applications you can use to unlock geo-restricted channels so anyone in the world can have access to television shows and movies from American broadcasting. This works not only for Netflix but for a variety of other channels as well, so you'll never run out of things to watch.

Netflix is already in SA, it just costs R50/month more than their regular subscription. Streams well.
