I singed up with Netflix (SA) during lockdown, and to be honest, I'm disappointed by their catalogue. So many movies and series which they do not have. For R150-odd p/m I'm not complaining too much, but with all the hype around Netflix I expected more.

I see there's some shows Showmax has that Netflix doesn't, and since Showmax is seemingly operated / owned by DSTV, I can't see them playing nice.

Ah well. Was a nice "trail". The inconvenience of having to subscribe to different streaming services and having different apps to watch my stuff pushes me towards sailing the seas. It's getting more difficult, sure, but it's also kind of a middle finger to these guys (esp. DSTV) only caring about money.

I consume too little content to put up with this faff.

Edit: Sorry about the last part - content licencing is expensive, it's not the services' fault. I'm more frustrated with having to pay for many different streaming services to watch what I want, than with having to pay for it, to be honest.

WTF?

Only once per email/credit/ debit card.
No more free 30 day trials after that with same details.

They probably will start checking ip addresses, if not already.

Showmax has hulu/hbo/disney stuff and they're planning to go global in 2021: https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/05/disney-aims-to-launch-hulu-internationally-in-2021/
That's going to be a huge hit on Dstv if Disney decides to also offer in SA as Dstv will lose the rights/be quite delayed with releases.

There's a reason Netflix and Amazon are investing in their own content.

Lol yeah trying to justify piracy. There's a bunch of stuff on Netflix that caters for every taste.

The sad reality is that before Netflix launched in SA, Monochoice entered into exclusive agreements with a lot of the content houses. Netflix in other countries have some shows that they cannot put onto their SA offering because of those exclusive deals still being in effect.I am fairly certain that an argument could be made to rescind those agreements with the rise of streaming services, but I doubt that it will happen.

Personally I am happy with Netflix. has a bunch of shows/movies that I enjoy. I am just confused by the massive number of Bollywood/Japanese/Chinese movies on there.

And how are you going to subscribe without one or a voucher?
It is probably aimed at the too lazy to sign up even when free. But you're right, if a person can't be bothered with even a free trial they're unlikely to sign up for a fee either. I'm sure they'll get a few sign ups out of the campaign though so won't be a total bust.
